Travelers' Intercom

A local newspaper mentioned a cruise ship that travels between Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Cuba, making five landings in Cuba.

I went on the website, www.yourcubacruise.com, in April and booked a cruise with ease through Cuba Cruise (phone the Toronto, Ontario, office at 855/364-4999), selecting one of the few balcony suites for CAD1,414 per person, double occupancy, which worked out to $2,318 for both my wife and me. Shore excursions and booze are not included, but onboard meals and...

While driving in Italy in 2005, I briefly crossed the border into the Lugano area of Switzerland. When leaving Switzerland, I was stopped at the border crossing by a Swiss policeman, who said I had been on the highway without a toll sticker. Luckily, I wasn’t fined, but I did have to pay for a sticker even though I was leaving the country.

My wife and I weren’t so lucky in Slovenia in May 2015. Because it is costly to pick up a rental car in one country and return it in another, we...

After spending a week with seven others in a rented villa near Manzanillo, Mexico, June 20-27, 2015, six of us had a 7-hour layover in Mexico City on our way home to Chicago. Since we had never visited the cty, we inquired about a tour.

Initially, we were told there were no tour companies operating from the airport, but then someone suggested we try a taxi. We made inquiries and eventually hired Ismael Calvillo (phone [cell] +044 55 2829 8415 or [home] 5712 7700) and his large taxi to...

Taking the aerial tram with Rainforest Adventures Costa Rica Atlantic (phone, in the US/Canada, 866/759-8726, www.rainforestadventure.com) was a great way for my wife and me to spend a few hours during our February 2014 visit to Central America.

Starting at Guapiles (about 50 kilometers east of San José), the tram traveled slowly eastward through the canopy for about a mile and a half, then reversed itself for the return trip. A guide traveled with us in the tram car, pointing out the...

Knowing we are looking forward to our journey, sometimes we read a tour company’s fine-print terms thoroughly, but sometimes we “scan” them. In the “Tour Participation Agreement” of Vantage Deluxe World Travel, I found the following under the heading “Cancellations and Refunds.”

“Vantage realizes that most people who cancel their reservations do so out of necessity. Nevertheless, cancellations are costly to administer and involve dedicated staff time and communications costs....

On a round-trip cruise off of Baja out of Los Cabos, Mexico, Jan.10-17, 2015, my wife and I sailed with Un-Cruise Adventures (Seattle, WA; 888/862-8881, www.un-cruise.com).

Their ships are small, with 22 to 82 guests. We sailed on the Safari Endeavour, which is one of the larger ships, but we had only about 40 passengers, 50% of capacity.

All of their cruises are one week long, Saturday to Saturday — perfect for little getaway vacations, especially if you live in the Western...

In my search for a custom tour of the Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka, I began by contacting tour companies, including ITN advertiser Ceylon Express International (Huntington Beach, CA; 800/423-9566, www.ceylonexpress.com), whose owner, Varini De Silva, was head and shoulders above her competitors in response time, advice and satisfying my travel requirements.

To see all the principal sites and also have downtime, it was apparent the trip needed to be 30 days, and even then we had...

For a couple of years, I contacted many agencies about traveling to Papua New Guinea (PNG) as a single in a group or on an independent tour. Each time, I met with negative vibes.

I would be told, “You can travel as a single in one of our group tours, but it will be necessary to share a room in some instances (e.g., a cabin on the Sepik Spirit).” In no case, they said, would I be booked for an independent tour.

All kinds of excuses were thrown my way, including “too dangerous”...
