Travelers' Intercom

In May 2015, I traveled with Overseas Adventure Travel, or OAT (Cambridge, MA; 800/955-1925, www.oattravel.com), to Namibia, with side trips to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Chobe National Park in Botswana. It was an interesting itinerary, and Namibia is a worthwhile travel destination. I rounded out my African stay with 10 days on my own in South Africa.

In Windhoek, Namibia, I highly recommend the NICE restaurant & bar (Mozart St., Windhoek, Namibia; phone +264 61 30 0710, www....

Sometimes it's “location, location, location.” Central to almost everything in Paris, including Notre-Dame on Île de la Cité, the Hôtel Saint-Louis en l’Isle (75 rue Saint-Louis en l'Île, 75004 Paris, France; phone +33 [0] 1 46 34 04 80, www.saintlouisenlisle.com), on the neighboring mid-Seine island of Île Saint-Louis, is a delightful, well-run hotel.

Having heard many good things about this 22-room hotel from a trusted friend, I booked directly with them about 10 months in advance,...

While visiting northern Portugal with my wife, Kay, in September 2014, we spent two nights at Casa do Ameal (Rua do Ameal, 119, 4900 – 585 Meadela, Viana do Castelo, Portugal; phone +351 91 420 62 27, www.casadoameal.com).

When we arrived, the owner, Isbel, came down the front steps to greet us and take us to our room. The beautiful house, purchased in 1669, is still in the same family. It was converted to a bed-and-breakfast a little over 30 years ago.

We spent time walking...

The many historic sites along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile are the focus of many visitors to Scotland’s capital. Waverley Railway Station, just to the north, provides convenient rail access, and nearby is Waverley Bridge, the nexus of various tour bus routes and the express Airlink buses to the airport.

Unfortunately, the hotels nearby are pricey, and, while staying in the center of the sightseeing area is convenient, it can be tiring to be constantly in the center of tourist turmoil. Rick...

In mid-April 2015, two of us took the early train out of Nice, France, several hours to Monterosso, Italy, where we bought a local ticket to another Cinque Terre town, Vernazza, one of the most beautiful villages I’ve ever seen.

We had no difficulty getting a room, booking on the spot at Trattoria Gianni Franzi (Via San Giovanni Battista, 41, 47, 49, 19018 Vernazza SP, Cinque Terre, Italy; phone +39 0187 821003, www.giannifranzi.it), on the square by the water. For a double room 112...

Since 2003, my wife and I have never traveled without our Bose noise-canceling headsets.

These headsets deal extremely well not only with airplane noise but with noisy neighbors at campsites. Their effect is quite amazing. Donning the headset reduces ambient noise by half, but activating the switch opens a world of absolute silence to the wearer.

Attaching a device such as an iPod is easy, and the resultant sound reproduction is of concert-hall quality.

After looking...

In the letter “Efficient Use of British Air Avios” (March ’15, pg. 14), Robert Tews pointed out that British Airways is a member of the airline alliance oneworld (www.oneworld.com), which has a fee structure based on zones. The longer the distance, the higher the fees charged when redeeming their frequent-flyer miles (Avios) for air tickets. British Air flights within Europe will have the most reasonable fees (zones 1, 2 and 3), and long-distance international flights will have the highest...

On a bright but cool, sunny morning during the first week of May in 2015, my daughter Linda and I walked along the quiet shoreline of the Left Bank of the Seine and found the first of three parks we would visit in Paris.

Located next to a small zoo about a 25-minute walk from our hotel, Hôtel Saint-Louis en l’Isle (75 rue Saint-Louis en l’Île), we easily found the Jardin Alpin in the Jardin des Plantes in the 5th arrondissement. The park was first created in 1635 as a...
