Travelers' Intercom

My husband and I generally are independent travelers, but for our customized 20-day, 19-night trip to Peru, April 20-May 9, 2014, we used the services of ITN advertiser Tara Tours (Miami, FL; 800/327-0080, www.taratours.com).

Our decision to use a tour operator was driven by a lack of time to do all the investigation to make the arrangements, ourselves, particularly the segments that we wanted to do by bus and within the Sacred Valley. Tara Tours’ José La Torre arranged our trip and...

Deciding to visit Romania and Bulgaria, a friend and I found an interesting small-group tour, Sept. 21-Oct. 4, 2014, through a higher-end company with which we had previously traveled, Travcoa (El Segundo, CA; www.travcoa.com). We placed a deposit on the tour and secured the air, which was nonrefundable. Just days before the final payment was due, Travcoa notified us that the trip had been canceled.

We didn’t want to lose money on the airfare and we still wanted to visit the...

I have long been captivated by pictures of Kazakhs who use eagles to hunt. In June 2014, my adult son, Jamin, and I had the opportunity to see some of these hunters as part of an 8-day, 7-night trek in Mongolia’s Altai Tavan Bogd National Park with Kazakh Tour (Main Square, Social Services Bldg., 2nd Floor, No. 3, P.O. Box 111, Ulgii, Bayan-Ulgii, Mongolia; phone +976 99422006, www.kazakhtour.com).

We each paid $1,373 for the trek, which included an extra day from the listed...

My wife and I spent two weeks in Portugal, mainly focusing on Lisbon and Porto, in September 2015. In each city, we rented an apartment for six nights. I would highly recommend these apartments, both of which were booked through Homeaway.com (www.homeaway.com).

• In LISBON, we booked Homeaway Rental No. 841261, for which we paid €100 (near $110) per night plus a €40 cleaning fee. A 30% deposit was made via PayPal at the time of booking, with the remainder paid in cash upon arrival....

The Gare du Nord in Paris is a beautiful rail station. Having arrived there early by taxi from our hotel on May 8, 2015, my daughter Linda and I enjoyed watching the proceedings from the long balcony on the second floor, including the departure of the Eurostar.

Our boarding process was a breeze. Finding the numbered car indicated on our tickets, it was with excitement that we embarked the 12:19 p.m. high-speed Thalys (www.thalys.com/be/en) train to Amsterdam.

The cost for...

I saw the item stating that travelers no longer will be able to get pages added to their US passports after Dec. 31, 2015 (Aug. ’15, pg. 58).

While serving as a volunteer for Travelers Aid International (www.travelersaid.org)* at Washington Dulles International Airport in 2012, I heard about a case in which Immigration agents in South Africa had refused to check in a passenger who didn’t have enough blank pages (six, I think) in his/her passport.**

Because of this, I suggest...

Paris passes

I agree with Rick Steves’ recommendation about using city passes to keep from standing in long ticket lines in certain cities in Europe (Oct. ’15, pg. 54). During a week-long visit to Paris in September 2015, I found a Paris Pass* to be very useful. I bought the 6-day pass, though I didn’t get the full value from it because I didn’t have time to visit all of the attractions for which admission was included.

The Paris Pass also comes with the Métro Pass and the...

Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, is worth three days of your time if you’re traveling to that part of the world. Staying in the atmospheric and historic La Candelaria neighborhood puts you within easy walking distance of the majority of the city’s attractions. There is plenty to see and do there.

I highly recommend that you begin your visit with at least one walking tour. The tiny tourist information office at the southwest corner of Plaza de Bolívar operates 2-hour English-language...
