Travelers' Intercom

For a trip to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos in January ’09, like the writer of the letter “SteriPEN® Sterilizes Water” (March ’09, pg. 56) I too was concerned about the expense and environmental aspects of drinking bottled water exclusively.

My solution was to purchase a Katadyn Extream XR (www.katadyn.com) “personal water purification system,” which consists of a 1½-pint bottle with an insert that filters and purifies water.

I bought mine at REI (800/426-4840, www.rei....

Rick Steves’ March ’09 column was on journaling.

When my husband retired from his work in geology and we moved from Angola back to the USA, I continued to travel to foreign countries once or twice a year for more than 25 years. On every trip I took, I kept a journal plus photos, books, travel guides and everything that had to do with that particular trip.

Each trip went into a shoe box and onto one of the shelves in my art studio, located in a heated garage space. I knew the...

My wife, Joan, and I usually travel by car or rail, with vaguely planned itineraries and seldom with prebooked accommodations.

For example, we spent 23 days in Sicily in September-October ’07 with a “smart fortwo” rental car from Thrifty. This is a 2-seater minicar with room for two 22-inch carry-on bags behind the seats. The “smart car” is nimble, parks practically anywhere, gets 45 miles per gallon, has automatic transmission and air-conditioning and, perhaps most importantly, does...

My husband, Colin, and I had a fantastic adventure in Tanzania and Kenya, Jan. 7-Feb. 7, 2008, one that began with a casual invitation from David, a missionary sponsored by our church: “Would you like to come to Africa to visit our mission work?”

David met us in Nairobi, Kenya, and suggested lunch at the Java House, one of a small chain begun by three Californians, featuring wonderful coffee and a menu of sandwiches, salads and desserts (10 locations in Nairobi; phone +254 [20]...

During a March ’07 exploration of the Basque region within France and Spain, we reserved a room for two nights at Casa del Organista (phone 942 84 03 52, www.casadelorganista.com) in Santillana del Mar, two hours west of Bilbao, Spain. We liked it there so much, we extended our stay to three nights. Our spacious room, at €55 (the current price range for a double room is €56-€89), had a balcony and was pleasantly decorated. They had a very complete breakfast (€4.50...

My wife, Joan, and I are inveterate independent travelers with 45 years’ international experience. We usually travel by car or rail, with vaguely planned itineraries and seldom with prebooked overnight accommodations.

We lived in Chengdu, China, from January to May ’05 and traveled widely throughout the country. Our “organized” tours included five nights on a 3-star Yangtze boat with two Italian tourists and 162 people who spoke only Chinese and a one-day round-trip minibus tour from...

My 7-year-old son, George, was, in his own words, “really into LEGO.” Knowing he would be a little boy for only a little while longer, my husband, Skip, and I decided to indulge him and took him to Denmark’s LEGOLAND in June ’08.

Rick Steves’ “Scandinavia” guidebook recommended staying overnight at either the LEGOLAND hotel or hostel. The hotel was out of our budget, so I booked a 2-day park package at the family hostel LEGOLAND Village (Ellehammers Alle 2, Billund, Denmark DK-7190;...

I took a tour of Morocco with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) in April ’08. It had many excellent features, including a special guide. During the post-trip extension to Marrakech, two days before we were to leave, I fell while climbing to see a waterfall. (In the future, I probably should eliminate any tours with the word “adventure” in the title.)

Through my travel agent, I had purchased travel insurance with Mercury Claims & Assistance of Wisconsin, LLC. At the time, the...
