In January ’08 I reserved a cruise to Norway for May 31-June 11, 2008, with Taitbout Voyages. I sent them a check for €1,180 (about $1,636) for the basic price and added €346 ($480) for a single cabin.

I asked Taitbout in several letters at what time I would have to meet the group on May 31 to take the bus from Paris to the cruise ship in Amsterdam and at what location. Taitbout Voyages never answered my letters or e-mails. The telephone number on their brochure was not reachable from...

On a tour of Peru in September ’08, the itinerary had us spending two nights in Cusco at the Samay Hotel (Av. San Martin 206, Cusco, Peru), then one night in Machu Picchu, then two more nights in Cusco. Although the accommodations at the Samay were good, we never got a decent night’s sleep due to noise from street traffic, trains and barking dogs as well as slamming doors, both staff and guests talking, etc. Earplugs helped only minimally.

Our room for our first stay at the Samay was...

My husband, Paul, and I traveled to Myanmar (Burma), Oct. 12-26, 2008, with Asia Transpacific Journeys (Boulder, CO; 800/642-2742, www.asiatranspacific.com). The trip was wonderful.

Including round-trip airfare, Los Angeles-Bangkok, Yangon, in premium-economy class; internal airfare, and 4- to 5-star boutique hotels, this all-inclusive tour cost $6,840 per person. There were eight members in our tour group plus a tour leader and another guide.

This was our second trip to...

From childhood, I was taught that Russia was my enemy and to fear it. My impression was that it was a mighty superpower of great warriors and conquerors. Now that I have had a chance to visit my “enemy’s” land and people and learn more about their history, culture and present-day conditions, my viewpoint has changed drastically.

I took a 16-day cruise-tour, “Imperial Russian Waterways & St. Petersburg,” from Vantage Deluxe World Travel (Boston, MA; 800/322-6677), Sept. 11-27, 2008...

My wife, Amber, and I decided to add a quick, one-night stay in Tallinn, Estonia, to our 2-week Nordic capitals tour in July ’07 simply because it was easy to get to and because there was a chapter on the city in our “Rick Steves’ Scandinavia” guidebook.

The city ended up exceeding our expectations and now holds a lofty place near the top of our list of favorite travel destinations. The Baltic capital revealed an engaging medieval Old Town surrounded by a bustling modern city.

Japan opens the island of Iwo Jima to visitors one day each year, usually in early March. During a tour with Military-Historical Tours (Alexandria, VA; 800/722-9501, www.miltours.com) in 2007, I took a truck to the cave where the Japanese hospital was located during WWII. The sides of the cave were lined with old shoes, an assortment of baskets, canteens, old gasoline drums and empty sake bottles.

About 20 yards into the cave there was a ladder leading up to a “spider hole” in the...

In Amazonia, man and nature live in harmony within the greatest biodiverse reserve of tropical forest on Earth. I’ve led several groups to the Peruvian Amazon, however my April 4-11, 2008, Brazilian Amazon visit trumped them all.

After a 5-hour flight from Miami, followed by an overnight in Manaus at the deluxe Tropical Manaus (Manaus, Brazil; phone +55 92 3658 3001, www.tropical hotel.com.br), with rates of $120-$450, we boarded our boat for the 90-minute trip on the Rio Negro to...

My husband, Ray, and I took the “Ultimate Australia” tour with Overseas Adventure Travel (Cambridge, MA; 800/493-6824, www.oattravel.com). In selecting this tour, we had been interested only in small-group itineraries that would take us to, at a minimum, Melbourne, Kangaroo Island, Uluru (Ayers Rock), the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney.

Our OAT tour took place Oct. 18-Nov. 4, 2007, and the experience was superb. (In 2009, this 17-day tour starts at $4,295 with air from Los...
