I have traveled on my own to Mexico and Central America two to three times a year for 19 years, doing all my own planning, but on a December trip to Guatemala I wanted to take it easy and let someone else worry about the arrangements while I focused on my photography.

I chose Caravan Tours, Inc. (Chicago, IL; 800/227-2826, www.caravan.com), whose 11-day/10-night “Guatemala, Tikal & Copán” tour starts at $995, land only. With taxes and single supplement, I paid about $1,500.

When my spouse, Isolde, and I visited Spain in May ’08, the AeroCity shuttle (phone +234 91 747 75 70, www.aerocity.com), at €21 (near $28) for two persons, was a convenient way to get from the airport to our accommodations.

We stayed at Hotel Europa (Calle del Carmen 4, 28013 Madrid; phone +34 915 212 900, www.hoteleuropa.net), located just off Puerta del Sol, and paid €100 ($132) for a superior double room. We were very pleased with the modern, clean room and the accommodating staff...

Julie Skurdenis’ article on Gujarat (March ’09, pg. 62) brought back many pleasant memories of the trip my wife, Audrey, and I took there in 2003, especially of sites like the Modhera Sun Temple and the hike up Mount Shatrunjaya in Palitana.

Our party included a (then) 80-year-old friend who insisted she could make it up the nearly 4,000 steps at Palitana without the doolie (dholi, or litter) carriers. She did, and we made many new friends as we stopped along the way. The Indian...

On a September trip to Australia, we went on two tours from Tangalooma Island Resort (Box 1102, Eagle Farm, QLD 4009, Australia; phone +61 7 3637 2118, fax 3268 6299, www.tangalooma.com), on Moreton Island off of Brisbane.

I wish I would have planned for additional days to relax in this peaceful place. The resort had many restaurants plus kids’ programs and many activities for adults, such as sand tobogganing, ATV tours, beach cricket, bird-watching tours, surf skiing, jet ski tours...

In response to a subscriber’s request, readers who take tours wrote in saying whether they prefer making their own flight arrangements for tours or having the tour company book the flights. We wanted to know, in either case, what the advantages and disadvantages are regarding convenience and cost plus how much trouble it was when something went wrong. We asked that, with any example, the writer name the tour or cruise company involved, the month and year of the trip and from where to where...

Reims, a large city (188,000 inhabitants) in northeast France, is often described as the heart of the Champagne country.

For my wife, Arlene, and me, the main attraction during our Sept. 22-26, 2008, visit there was the majestic Notre-Dame de Reims, where for over 200 years the kings of France were crowned, the most famous being Charles VII (with Joan d’Arc at his side).

Construction of the cathedral was started in 1211 and took 100 years, although it was never completed...

On an independent trip to Venezuela with two friends in December ’08, we visited Mérida.

First, the bad news — Mérida’s Téleferico (cable car), which is described as the highest and longest cable car route in the world, is CLOSED indefinitely and has been since August ’08.

Some say that it needs upgrading; others say that the prospect of large construction contracts and kickbacks accounts for talk about building a new one. In any case, if taking Mérida’s Téleferico is a major...

The first thing our local guide asked my wife, Nancy, and me when we arrived in Chennai, India, was the departure time of our flight to Bangkok two days hence. After a month of travel throughout India without a hitch, we wondered about his question.

The next day he advised us to be at Madras International Airport (MAA) at least three hours before our scheduled departure (our flight left at midnight around Dec. 23, 2008). We thought this to be a bit excessive, but we followed his...
