My husband and I took the “Arts and Culture of Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia” tour, Jan. 11-Feb. 4, 2009, with Danu Enterprises (Capitola, CA; 888/476-0543) — a great trip. The land part cost $3,332 per person, and the air portion, out of San Francisco and including all internal flights overseas, cost $2,256 each.

Except for breakfasts, most meals were not included. For two people, restaurant meals (with wine or beer) ran $40 in Vietnam, $20-$30 in Laos and $10 in Cambodia.

In St. Petersburg, I highly recommend the independent-tour-guide company DenRus (Ligovsky Pr. 73 Office 608-610, St. Petersburg 191040, Russia; phone +7 [812] 572 4511 or, from the US, 561/459-5534). My husband, Lou, and I used DenRus during our 3-day cruise stop there, July 19-21, 2009, staying on the ship at night.

We signed up for the “Value Tour,” at $395 per person for the three days, with a promise that there would be no more than 20 to 25 people on the tour. As it turned out,...

If you are going to Lalibela — and it would be a pity to go to Ethiopia and not go to Lalibela — try to get a room at the Mountain View Hotel (c/o Lalibela post office, Lalibela, Ethiopia; phone +251 333 360 804 or mobile +251 911 983 396).

Although it’s inconveniently located at the end of town, it’s worth it for the amazing view from the rooms, dining room and terrace; the spacious accommodations, and the excellent staff.

On my visit in October ’09, rooms cost $43 single and...

At Ljubljana, Slovenia, I stayed near the airport at Pension Jagodic (Vopovlje 10, 4207 Cerklje, Slovenia; phone +386 4 25 21 333) on June 1, 2009.

By train from Salzburg, Austria, I arrived at the main depot in Ljubljana, went to the bus terminal and took a bus for the airport. I told the driver I was heading for Pension Jagodic and he said he knew the Burgar family and dropped me off in front of the pension, which is 15 minutes (three kilometers) from the airport.

This is a...

Saltwater scents from the Ligurian Sea mixed with aromas of homemade focaccia from the nearby bakery, Forno di Monterosso, as my wife, Cindy, and I arrived at La Spiaggia Hotel (Via Lungomare 98, Monterosso al Mare; phone 0187-817-567), five minutes’ walk from the rail station.

Andrea Poggi has owned this grand, old hotel for years. Julia and Ella work the reception area and give the art of hospitality a new meaning.

There are 19 rooms, some, like ours, with balconies facing...

My friend Billie Rivers and I spent two nights in Greenwich at One Six Two (162 Westcombe Hill, Greenwich, London, SE3 7DH, U.K.; phone +44 [208] 4655444, e-mail

bookings@onesixtwo.co.uk) in September ’09. The location is convenient to the London City Airport, and it’s walking distance from the park.

The guest house’s webpage described the room as a boutique-style twin room with stylish en suite shower facilities. It also had a digital TV and free WiFi access. We found our twin...

ITN asked for those who are mobility challenged and enjoy cruising to write in (Feb. ’10, pg. 68).

My husband, Leon, and I have taken many cruises, on both large and small ships, the most recent one a Mediterranean cruise in October ’08. Leon uses a wheelchair and we normally book a handicapped cabin.

In our experience, so far as space available in which to move around, the cabins on Celebrity and Princess ships were more wheelchair-friendly than Carnival’s.

Here are the...

I had a mild case of polio as a child and had no problems with mobility for many years. However, in my late 40s or early 50s I started having weakness, first in my left leg and later in my right. As time has passed (I am now 64), I have progressed from having to use my husband’s arm to steady myself to, first, one cane, then two canes, then a Rollator (walker with four wheels) and finally a scooter.

I mention this because no two handicapped persons will have the same needs. I can...
