In 1996 I asked Swedish friends to recommend a hotel in the central part of Sweden. They told me they NEVER stay in hotels; they always stay in vandrarhem (hostels). When I said, “But I’m too old to share a room with strangers,” they said that they never share: “Just pay a little extra and you have a room to yourself.” So I decided to try it and have been doing it ever since.

I’d like everyone to write in about their own experiences staying in hostels. I will start it off with my...

During my trip to Zagreb in July ’09, I visited the Atelier Meštrović (Mletaçka 8, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia; phone 385 1 428 586, www.mdc.hr/mestrovic/atelijer/opci-en.htm). Ivan Meštrović’s studio and 17th-century house are the setting for a vast array of his sculptures and models.

Examples of Croatia’s most famous sculptor’s renderings of famous people, religious icons and just plain folks are exhibited inside as well as outside in the garden. This is a fascinating museum where you can...

I purchased two round-trip tickets from CheapAir.com on Oct. 10, 2009, for travel from Los Angeles to Pisa via New York and Rome on April 27, 2010. These were Alitalia/Delta code-share tickets.

When I purchased the tickets, the Los Angeles-New York flight was scheduled to depart LAX at 6:10 a.m., and my wife and I would have a 2¼-hour layover at JFK. This was the key factor in our purchasing these particular tickets because not only would it be necessary to change terminals to make...

For those not in the US military, it has been virtually impossible to visit Wake Island, “the Alamo of the Pacific.” After several failed attempts, I had almost given up.

Finally, permission was granted to Valor Tours along with Military Historical Tours to take a group of 141 to that most difficult destination. The “Return to Wake” tour, Dec. 8-12, 2009, cost $3,500, including round-trip airfare from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Wake.

Our tour group represented over a dozen nations...

When planning a trip for October ’09, my wife, Marilyn, and I decided to include a tour of the World War I battle sites in northern Belgium and France. This would be a special tour for my wife, whose uncle’s name is inscribed on the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge, the site of a significant battle.

We did not wish to drive ourselves and we wanted a knowledgeable guide to show us around. After doing some checking on the Internet, we decided to go with Mike Williamson of...

For independent travel in India, I highly recommend Swagatam Tours Pvt. Ltd. (www.swagatam.com), which is based in New Delhi and has offices in Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore.

I had signed up for two package tours for February-March 2010, one in southern India with Adventures Abroad and the other in Rajasthan and Gujarat with Explore. To fill in the gap between them, a fellow ITN reader suggested I contact Swagatam to arrange visits to Varanasi and Khajuraho.

Several months...

When my friend Mike and I visited Iguaçu Falls in fall 2009, we stayed at Hotel Del Rey (Rua Tarobá 1020, CEP 85851-220, Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil; phone [45] 2105-7500, www.hoteldelreyfoz.com.br).

I had reserved an air-conditioned room with three beds (originally, we planned to travel with another friend) for BRL150 (about $85) per night, which included an abundant breakfast.

We took advantage of their online offer to arrange a transfer from the airport to the hotel for $...

I’ve learned a valuable lesson: don’t neglect the small ads in ITN.

The “Let’s Go to France” package from Drifter Sister (Boulder City, Nevada; 702/294-4365, www.driftersister.com) provided us a wonderful two weeks in a castle first mentioned in the 14th century: Château d’Agel in Narbonne.

The price was $2,900 per person, double occupancy, and included round-trip train tickets (Paris-Narbonne), the castle stay, a day trip to the Canal du Midi, most lunches, three rental autos...
