On a 32-day cruise aboard the “Tahitian Princess” (now called Ocean Princess), Oct. 18-Nov. 19, 2009, my husband, Bob, and I did the following on our shore trips.

Cape Town — Having read in ITN (April ’04, pg. 92) about the certified guide Denise Dick (e-mail denised@yebo.co.za), we e-mailed her a couple of months before our cruise. She was great. She picked us up at the dock and we took an eight-hour tour for ZAR1,100 (about $150) for two of us plus the cost of lunch and our tip to...

I’ve led small-group tours to Cinque Terre in Italy five times since 2006, most recently in May ’09. Here are some thoughts.

Monterosso al Mare, the northernmost village, is the best place to stay. Although it is the largest of the five villages, it is still quaint and intimate and, I believe, has the most to offer. I recommend staying in the old section, a short taxi ride or 10- to 15-minute walk from the rail station.

My favorite hotel is Albergo Amici (Via Buranco 36, 19016...

After visiting our new granddaughter in London in October ’09, my wife, Kay, and I traveled through Scotland and England’s Lake District via train. We obtained our Senior Railcards at a local train station for £26 (near $42) each, but it would have cost only £23.40 if purchased online at www.senior-railcard.co.uk. They are also available (at full price) from all London airports except Heathrow.

By using the passes, we saved £166 ($286) on the total rail fares during our 9-day...

Editor’s note: In the following account, ITN has agreed to withhold the name of the subscriber and tour company. Nevertheless, we feel readers can benefit from the lessons imparted.

A subscriber wrote in and described how, following an Adriatic cruise-tour that he and his travel companion took, they and the ship’s passengers headed to the Dubrovnik airport, where they learned that, except for two couples in business class, all their names were not on the manifest for the Croatia...

My husband, Randall, and I enjoyed a two-week visit to Iceland in late June ’09. The first eight days we traveled around the country with a birding tour company, then we picked up a rental car from Hertz Iceland at Keflavik Airport for six days of touring on our own.

We had reserved a compact car at a cost of ISK19,782 (about $160) per day, before taxes, etc. At the Hertz counter, we were asked if we wanted collision damage waiver protection. There were two levels of CDW coverage:...

My husband and I took a tour in June ’09 that focused on dance, with choreographer Theodor Vasilescu (in the US and Canada, contact Ping Chun, 49 Junard Dr., Morristown, NJ 07960; phone 973/539-7020 or e-mail ping.chun@att.net). Theodor leads a tour each summer to different regions of Romania; some folks on our tour had traveled with him six times!

The land price for our 12-night tour was $2,000 per person and included all museum admissions, a driver, guide, classes in traditional...

I chose the “Silk Road plus Shangri-La” tour, May 26-June 11, 2009, from China Plus (Irving, TX; 888/868-8811) because, after a day in Beijing, it went to the furthermost province in the west of China, Xinjiang. The cost, with air from the West Coast, was $4,298.

I never expected to see such contrasts, even in the landscape — from desert to mountain peaks. I enjoyed seeing Xinjiang’s capital, Urumqi. What a surprise to see skyscrapers and fancy shop windows in this 2,000-year-old city...

In our 40 years of travel, my wife, Arnette, and I have never had a more perfectly planned and executed trip than our five-country, five-week independent East Africa experience, July 27-Aug. 28, 2009.

Julie of Tribes Travel, Ltd. (12 Business Centre, Earl Soham, Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK; phone 01728 685971), planned the trip. The dramatic feature was NO glitches for any day of the trip. You will be in good hands with her planning.

We visited Rwanda and its gorillas plus Kenya,...
