Our family of six took a trip to Greece, Jan. 1-12, 2010, after which three members of our family left for home while our daughter, my husband and I extended our stay two more days.

On the day we left Athens, we went to the Monastiraki station to purchase metro tickets to the airport. It was very early, and there was no one except us buying tickets from a lone ticket agent. My husband clearly asked for three adult tickets to the airport, and we paid €1 each.

Obviously, the...

I highly recommend Triplíce Tour, located in Hotel Del Rey (Rua Tarobá 1020, CEP 85851-220, Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil; phone [45] 2105-7500).

On a tour to Brazil in October-November ’09, my friend Mike and I visited Iguaçu Falls for three days and booked a day tour with Triplíce to visit Itaipú dam, the Bird Park and the falls on the Brazilian side for BRL190 (near $104). As it turned out, there were only the two of us on tour.

Our guide, Fernando, who spoke excellent...

My husband and I had 10 hours between disembarking a cruise ship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a late flight to Miami on Dec. 10, 2009.

On the Internet we had found a wonderful guide, whom we highly recommend: Nestor Silva (from the US, phone 646/736-7899 and the call will be forwarded to Brazil). Having studied in New York, he speaks idiomatic English.

We had been to Rio before and had done all the “must sees,” so he worked with us to put together a full, 10-hour tour of...

Thank you, Bruce Kerfoot (April ’06, pg. 83), for recommending Mehmet Ozbalci of Turfantastik Tours (Istanbul, Turkey; phone +90 212 589 33 25 or fax 589 32 56).

My husband, daughter and I took a trip to Turkey in December ’09 and hired Mehmet to guide us in the countryside. He suggested a 6-day itinerary including the ancient cities of Troy, Pergamum, Ephesus and Aphrodisias plus the hot calcium pools at Pamukkale, a short visit to the Mevlâna (Rumi) museum and shrine at Konya and a...

My companion and I visited western Turkey on the 14-day/13-night “Glories of Turkey” tour from Neon Tours (Istanbul, Turkey; phone +90 [212] 274 90 00), a subsidiary of Key Tours (Fairfax, VA; 800/576-1784), in October-November ’09.

The land cost was $1,499 per person. The hotels were excellent, mostly five-star, alternating two-night stops with one-nighters.

Our guide for the tour, Yusuf Burak Ozdur (phone +90 532 231 1415 or e-mail bozdur@yahoo.com), was really a cut above...

My husband, Carl, and I toured Croatia privately, Sept. 9-24, 2009. For the first part of our trip we used CroTouring (Milutina Baraèa 20, 51000 Rijeka, Hrvatska, Croatia; phone +385 51 277 086). Their guides made it not just a good trip but a great one.

Carl and I chose Opatija as our base for our first week because we wanted to explore the northern part of Croatia and the southern part of Slovenia and to enjoy the Adriatic.

The manager of CroTouring, Silvia Todorovic, met us...

I spent six weeks traveling in India in February-March ’10 (June ’10, pg. 27). Here are some tips based on that experience.

Take the time to greet people by joining your hands together upright in front of you, bowing your head slightly and saying, “Namaste.” Even people who speak some English will appreciate the courtesy. I often was rewarded by watching people’s expressions change from indifference or suspicion to broad smiles of welcome.

Do not even think about driving...

In Delhi, India, I recommend the splendid Spice Route Restaurant in the Imperial Hotel (Janpath, New Delhi 110001, India; phone +91 11 2334 1234). The venue itself is like visiting an art gallery.

We were there in January ’09 and the Thai food was outstanding. It was a little on the expensive side for India but well worth it.

An Express Lunch at The Spice Route costs INR2,000 (near $47) per person.
