My wife and I stayed at the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel (San Martin 1225, Buenos Aires, 1104, Argentina) on Jan 30 & 31, ’04, as part of a package tour to Antarctica.

Late afternoon on the day we arrived, we took a short walk from the hotel. A heavy rain and windstorm arose very quickly. Soaked to the skin and hurrying back to the hotel, we were less than a block away when I fell flat on my face, gashing my forehead on gravel.

Fortunately, a young man came by, helped me...

We don’t usually have favorable comments about car rental agencies, but in October ’03 we received extraordinary service from Dionysos S.A. Rent-A-Car (25 Syngrou Ave., Athens 11743, Greece; phone 210-9243310, fax 210-2943750, e-mail dionisos@otenet.gr), a franchisee of Thrifty Car Rental.

The operations manager, Andreas Tanteles, and each one of the agency’s employees with whom we dealt in person or over the phone, were wonderfully friendly and helpful.

The economy car we...

We participated in a week-long “working vacation” in northern England, March 27-April 3, ’04, with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, or BTCV (Conservation Centre, 163 Balby Rd., Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN4 0RH; phone 01302 572-244, fax 01302 310 167, e-mail information@btcv.org.uk).

The cost for the week was £95 (about $170) per person. This included all expenses except a dinner on our day off.

We were picked up at the Hexham train station late Saturday...

We arrived in Venice, Italy, on April 8, ’04, flying from Chicago via Madrid on Iberia Airlines — excellent service, comfort and food. Luggage was handled promptly and efficiently.

One of the local security dogs (God bless them) fell in love with a piece of my wife’s luggage in Madrid and we were inspected. The inspector spoke excellent English and was polite, professional and efficient. There was nothing illegal to be found, and the inspector said it may have been that our luggage...

I would be interested in hearing from others concerning their rental car insurance experiences.

For over 30 years I declined the auto rental companies’ insurance in England and France and used my credit card coverage for the CDW (collision damage waiver). The only incident I had was when a shopping cart or branch sticking out of a hedge on a country lane put a one-inch scratch on the rear panel of my rented car. I felt the rental company sent an excessively high repair bill, but it...

My husband and I began planning our January ’04 trip to Australia and New Zealand about a year ahead. Several people mentioned that a stopover in Fiji would be a good way to end it. About that time, we read about a “Whale’s Tale day cruise.” We had our trip coordinator, ElderTreks (Toronto, Ontario; phone 800/741-7956), check it out and then made arrangements to include it in our trip.

On the morning of Jan. 22, we were picked up at our hotel in Nadi, Fiji, at 9 and entertained on the...

We took Trafalgar’s tour No. 159 to Finland, Russia, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, Sept. 9-24, ’03. The tour cost us $2,560 each, including air from Philadelphia. This was our fourth Trafalgar tour and possibly the last, due mainly to the prices of and number of optional tours this tour had.

Trafalgar’s tour brochure outlined what we were to see on an each-day basis. Each description seemed to be worded so that it was impossible to determine if places mentioned were included in the...

My wife and I went on a “Discover Thailand” tour with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), Sept. 9-Oct. 2, ’03. Our tour was 16 days long, to which we added a pre-trip of three days in Cambodia, visiting Angkor Wat. The basic cost was $1,690 per person, including airfare via Minneapolis and Tokyo. The pre-trip option cost $690 each — expensive but worth it! Taxes added a further $62 to each fare.

I have no complaints about value for money. This was a good trip from that point of view and...
