I attended the Chelsea Flower Show in London on May 25, ’04, and found it a big disappointment. This was my second visit and the crowds were such that we could barely view the gardens and exhibits. The Royal Horticultural Society bragged that 160,000 persons attended during the week. That amounts to 32,000 daily! We got a better view on the evening television coverage.

I recommend you bypass the Chelsea show and go to the Gardening Scotland Show in Edinburgh in early June. (Find...

Each Sunday afternoon at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, there is a free organ concert for about an hour. Starting between 4 and 5 p.m., depending on the time of year, each concert presents a guest organist from one of the cathedrals of Europe.

We always attend this concert whenever we visit Paris. They print a schedule for each month listing the organist and which pieces will be presented. We like to get there early to get seats because often there is standing room only.

I spent two weeks in Portugal, May 12-27, ’04, staying only at pousadas. These are government-owned hotels, usually converted castles, palaces or monasteries. While there, I found a brochure titled “Special Programs.” It stated that if you are over 60 years old you can get a discount of 35%, or if your stay is for three nights you can get it for the price of two nights, or if you are under 30 you can get 20% off, etc.

Adding up all the discounts I would have been eligible for, I think...

My wife and I took a trip to Europe in May ’04. Here are some tips for travelers to Prague.

• In Prague, try the U Mazlu restaurant (Jungmannova 26, Prague, Czech Republic; phone 224-946-896). It is located around the corner from the big Tesco department store on Narodni and a block from the tourist area.

The extensive menu is written in both Czech and English, but the restaurant’s patrons were mostly locals. I think we were the only ones eating who were not smoking, but that’...

On a trip to the Balkans my husband and I took in May ’04, we had wanted to travel by bus and find accommodations as we went. As soon as we arrived in Tirana, Albania, we realized that language problems would require us to have a car and driver.

In three hours, Sadik Malaj of Sondor Travel & Tours (sondor2002@hotmail.com) made all the arrangements. Our driver was his son, Dorien Malaj, who spoke English very well and was an excellent driver. The car and driver for eight days cost...

In June’s “Boarding Pass,” on page 121, Carol Vorchheimer’s plea for handicapped-accessible-travel outfits struck a note with us.

• Yes, shore excursions on cruises can be a problem (as we found on our April ’04 trip in Brazil), but the America West Steamboat Company (2101 Fourth Ave., Ste. 1150, Seattle, WA 98121; phone 800/434-1232) was so great in Alaska last year, we planned a trip with them on the Columbia River this summer.

• If you want the extreme in accessible ships,...

We traveled to Italy, April 27-May 1, ’04.

• In Milan, try the centrally located Hotel Sanpi (Via Lazzaro Palazzi 18). Our room was large and very clean, with two beds and a remodeled bathroom with (on request) shower. The online rate was $135. A European breakfast was included. We found the staff very accommodating.

• Across the street from the hotel is the excellent restaurant New Transatlantico Re del Mare. They served a pasta with mushrooms that was one of the best I’ve...

When at the Honolulu International Airport, I enjoy the gardens there. You will see them from above, but go downstairs and walk through them.

One garden is Japanese style, another is Chinese and a third is Hawaiian. There are benches where you can sit and watch the fish in the streams. There is shade. It is very relaxing and tranquil. I have been there many times.
