Travelers' Intercom

Along with another couple, my wife and I “narrowboated” the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in southeast Wales at the end of July ’03. We hired our narrowboat through Beacon Park Boats and had a wonderful experience.

Alistair and Sarah Kirkpatrick, the owners of BPB, furnished us with a practically new, 52-foot narrowboat that had two separate bedrooms with adjoining shower/toilet/sink (as well as a cellphone, in case we had any problems). The rental cost for one week, Saturday to...

In reading the March ’04 issue, on page 32 I came across a reader’s comments concerning a cruise aboard the Novikov Priboy in Russia. Contrary to the general impression left by those comments, I found my two Russian river cruises — on a different ship — to compare favorably with any.

I took my first trip to Russia with GT Cruises (2610 E. 16th St., Brooklyn, NY 11235; phone 800/828-7970), embarking the M/S Russ in Moscow on Aug. 12, 1995, and disembarking in St. Petersburg on Aug. 26...

I noticed in the Travelers’ Intercom section a couple of rather negative reports of Russian riverboat experiences (March ’04, pg. 32 & April ’04, pg. 82). Having enjoyed three such trips over the past six or seven years, I would like to reassure other travelers that these trips can be exceedingly enjoyable and interesting.

Our travels to Russia were with GT Cruises (which now promotes these cruises under the name Peter the Great Cruises), and as to the ships and crews I can speak...

On a trip to Taiwan in 2001 I visited the Great National Treasures of China collection in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It’s a mindblower. My eyes almost dropped out of my head! Here are many treasures of Imperial China that were saved by the KMT in 1949, spirited away from the Communists.

Only about 20% of the collection is on display. It ranges from prehistoric ceramics, ironwork and pottery to weapons and much more. There are the most beautiful paintings, porcelain and...

Some of the odd-shaped balloons at the International Balloon Festival at Château

For Christmas 2003, my husband, Bernie, and I decided to give each other an extra-nice present: we would take a 9-day “Hot Air Balloon Flight Over the Alps” tour in January ’04. Two days of the tour would be spent at the International Balloon Festival in Château d’Oex, Switzerland.

This unique tour is organized and operated by the Buddy Bombard Society (333 Pershing Way, West Palm Beach, FL 33401; phone 800/862-8537, e-mail travel@bombardsociety.com). Buddy is a balloon pilot, himself...

Four of us, who were spending the week of Thanksgiving 2003 in Budapest and Prague, were annoyed that we couldn’t escape popular American music playing everywhere. Also, while we weren’t surprised to find McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC, in Prague we were caught off guard to see pizzerias on every block.

Although it dates from Roman times, Budapest is basically a 19th-century city. Most of the public buildings, apartments and monuments date from this period.

Although we had a...

(Part 2 of 3) We spent six weeks in England, July-August ’03, basically exploring the Cotswold area. We were based in Cirencester (May ’04, pg. 82) and, apart from a side trip to Wales to visit friends, we returned there every night. In Wales, incidentally, we visited Powis Castle. If you go there, make sure you visit the “Clive of India” collection.

On our way back from Wales we stopped at Hay-on-Wye, the book town I had long wanted to visit. There are so many bookstores, it is wise...

As I was making a reservation for a rental car in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in January ’04, I asked the agent, “Will there be any hidden charges?”

“No other charges,” the Alamo representative answered.

I pondered the booking I had just made, then realized that Alamo’s quote was $200 less than that of other companies I had called. Had I neglected to inquire about all the rental options? While I knew about CDW, I had no information about the amount of coverage for liability,...
