In PNG, there’s a lot to go wrong, but our Aug. 7-22, ’05, trip with Travcoa (2424 SE Bristol St., Ste. 310, Newport Beach, CA 92660; 866/591-0070 or www. travcoa.com) was just fine. It was a luxury tour — the land cost was $9,000 — so there were no hardships; we were safe in our little “bubble.” We spent one week in The Highlands and one on the Sepik River on a nice, 40-passenger cruise ship.

The other travelers were interesting, fun people — many of them ITN subscribers. We, and I...

During a time of particularly nice weather in November ’05, while on a trip to Hong Kong I decided to visit the newly opened Disneyland Hong Kong.

After arrival in town, I found that an ample amount of literature concerning the park was widely available. I picked up my brochures from the Tourist Information Office at the Star Ferry Kowloon.

Tickets for Disneyland may be purchased at the park, online or at the Hong Kong MTR station. Regular adult admission was HK$295 (near US$38...

My husband, Jim, and I took the trip of a lifetime in August ’05. It was both an experience and an education.

Since selling our business six years ago, we have taken two or three trips each year to exotic destinations. Thus far, most of our travels have been to Asian countries. Because of the distance, we typically stay a month at each place. While working, we had been limited to shorter trips to less distant destinations.

We always travel with groups of no more than a dozen...

Whether walking the road to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain as a pilgrim or visiting the city as a day-tripper, you may want to add an additional day or two to experience some of Santiago de Compostela’s highlights.

For breathtaking views of Santiago de Compostela, climb the narrow staircase and enjoy the bird’s-eye view of the city from atop the Cathedral. The entrance and ticket office for this adventure is located in the Pazo de Xelmírez, to the left of the main staircase...

The Plaza Mayor area in Madrid, Spain, can be very pricey for meals, especially in the tapas bars on the street Arcos de Cuchilleros; they are mentioned in almost every guidebook.

My wife and I, much to our delight, in March ’06 stumbled upon a jewel of a restaurant for lunch just a block away from the Plaza Mayor. The restaurant is Bar Casa Jacinto (Plaza de San Miguel 4, 28005, Madrid, Spain; phone 913546013).

Most restaurants have lunch specials, but this one had not only...

When I travel, I collect pyramids, train trips, ancient wonders, Art Deco cities and more by visiting them and writing down the where and when. One of my favorite collection categories is “bridges,” and I came across one of the most unique purely by accident in February ’06.

I was in Italy, hitting some of the sites I’d missed and rehitting others — Lucca, to be specific — and as evening fell I boarded the train to return to Pisa. However, I got on the wrong train and ended up...

Every year I spend a wonderful four days in London, seeing as many theatrical productions as I can squeeze in. This year’s visit, in April, was one of my best experiences so far.

For convenience, I always find a hotel right off of the tube’s Piccadilly line. This time I stayed at the Grange Strathmore Hotel (58 Rochester Row, London, SWIP IJU, U.K.; phone +011-800-22-GRANGE or visit www.grangehotels.com). I paid £55 (near $98) for a single room with facilities en suite. It was very...

While on my independent tour of Australia in March ’06, I was waiting for the Adelaide-Alice Springs train to board and got into a conversation with Lois, a lady who had lived in Alice Springs for 20 years.

When I told Lois that I was renting a car and driving in the Outback, she warned me not to stop for Aborigines if they tried to flag me down on the road. She said they would not hurt me, but they might have a group hidden in the bush waiting for me to stop who would then intimidate...
