There is nothing like the excitement and romance of a cruise. If it’s a long cruise, like a Grand Voyage (50-plus days) or a World Cruise (105 days), so much the better. But think twice. I wish I had known about the following before we spent $30K.

We took the Grand Voyage “Orient Explorer 2005” on the ms Amsterdam, Holland America’s 1,300-passenger flagship, Oct. 6-Dec. 7. Over 62 days we sailed from Seattle to Russia, Japan, Korea, China (including Hong Kong), Singapore, Australia,...

My partner and I took a one-week cruise from Panama City to Los Sueños, Costa Rica, on Windjammer Barefoot Cruises’ Amazing Grace, July 30-Aug. 6, ’05. The price was $982 per person, double occupancy.

Since my partner and I have traveled previously on Windjammer cruises and had a delightful time, we recommended the company to my sister and her husband and planned a vacation together. Unfortunately, we had a horrible experience this time.

The crew was grumpy and constantly...

My wife, Elizabeth, and I took a cruise in the Galápagos Islands, Dec. 9-18, ’05, visiting on average one new (volcanic) island a day. The ship, Polaris, and all its personnel were provided by Lindblad Expeditions. Arrangements for the trip, however, were beautifully made by Carol Larsen of Betchart Expeditions (Cupertino, CA; 800/252-4910). She is simply a joy to deal with and totally effective as a tour director/expedition manager.

At a cost of $4,180 each, the tour included...

My husband, Ed, and I took a trip to the Galápagos in April ’05 aboard the 96-passenger Celebrity Xpedition (Celebrity Cruises, Miami, FL; 866/973-8466 or www.celebrity xpeditions.com).

The 10-night package included a 2-night pre-cruise stay, with meals, at the Marriott in Quito, Ecuador; a city tour; transfers; air transportation between Quito and Baltra Island and return; a one-night post-cruise stay in Quito (the dinner that night was at the Opera House, quite a grand place); the 7...

I joined a 10-day “Imperial Cities” tour of Italy with Gate 1 Travel on Oct. 10, ’05. Our group of 26 had a superb tour guide, Ms. Flavia Sciubba (flaviasole@hotmail.com).

Very personable, accommodating and charming, with a wonderful sense of humor, Ms. Sciubba is fully qualified to share her fantastic knowledge of Italy with international travelers. Her English is flawless. She is very cultured music-wise and art-wise and was scheduled to exhibit her modern paintings in Rome. A...

Tango shows are still alive and well in Buenos Aires (April ’06, pg 16 & June ’06, pg. 15). I saw a great one at El Viejo Almacen (Balcarce e Independencia [c1064AAO], San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina; www.viejoalmacen.com) on Jan. 12, ’06.

For $69 I had a delicious dinner, went across the street to the theater, had a tango lesson, then saw a great show. There were a few songs plus other entertainment (but only as a filler while the dancers changed costumes).

I booked...

When one goes to Buenos Aires, the culture one most experiences is the culture. Yes, there are fine museums and interesting structures. However, it is walking through the barrios, going to a tango salon and the theater, visiting the street markets and enjoying a great variety of wonderful food and wine that makes Buenos Aires such a delight.

On our December ’04 trip to Argentina’s capital, we watched tango being performed in tango salons, in theaters and in the streets and even took...

In planning for a trip to Antarctica in January ’06, I decided to also visit Iguazú Falls on the Argentina/Brazil border. While searching the Web, I found the Buenos Aires travel agency Partir Viajes E.V.T. (Av. Córdoba 679, 1° C, Buenos Aires, Argentina, C.P. AAF1054C; tel. +54 11 4515 1888 or visit www.partirviajes.com. ar). My contact there was Noelia Delpech (e-mail noelia@ partirviajes.com.ar).

Noelia was able to make the following arrangements, fitting my schedule: three nights...
