My wife and I in April ’06 took a most enjoyable holiday touring Britain with Midway Motor Travel (Southerwicks, Corsham, Wiltshire, England, SN13 9NH; phone 800/214-8738 or e-mail admin@midwaymotortravel. com), and I would like to endorse the many excellent references made over the years by ITN readers about this excellent company. I would, however, like to bring to your attention details of a serious problem visitors to Britain now encounter when trying to use credit or debit cards.

When we used our MasterCard for a purchase in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 10, ’06, the new machine refused it because there was no “PIN number.” We insisted that the assistant try again and she refused. The manager came over and inserted our card again. The machine then said to enter the last four digits of the card. She did so and the card was accepted.

In the new machines they have for Visa and MasterCard, the card is inserted (as in a hotel door), not swiped. However, on the side...

My wife and I departed for Amsterdam on April 3, ’06. We were to be there for five days, departing on Sunday the 9th for London Heathrow, where our driver would meet us and take us to Bath to stay three nights, stopping by Blenheim Palace on the way. We then would stay three nights in Shaftesbury, finally heading into London on the 16th for a stay of four nights. To complicate money matters, the 17th was Easter Sunday and Monday would be a bank holiday.

The plan was that we would...

I go to Thailand once or twice a year. At present, I’m coordinating a tsunami relief project in Phi Phi and Phuket. In March ’06, two Thai friends and I had dinner at a popular Phuket city seafood restaurant, Ta Yay. Our dinner (stir-fried morning glory, shrimp soup, chicken and vegetables in oyster sauce, rice, four juice drinks and one coconut) was delicious, but the bill caught us by surprise: 1,222 baht (about $29). We asked for a recalculation and the bill came back at 485 baht (about $...

Driving oneself is one option for experiencing New Zealand’s scenic diversity. However, I want to describe an encounter my wife and I had with police on the South Island so that future drivers can at least be forewarned.

In February ’06, we had enjoyed a week on the North Island and were just beginning the driving portion of our South Island tour. Shortly after picking up our rental car at Greymouth, we were pulled over and stopped by an officer in an unmarked car for going 113...

Based on my April ’06 trip to Iran, I’d like to share three practical tips with ITN readers who are thinking of going there.

First, I was told that the Iranian Interests Section of the Pakistani Embassy in Washington will not issue a tourist visa to an American unless the prospective tourist already has received a visa authorization number from Tehran.

I had to send a copy of my passport information page to the company arranging my tour, which in turn presumably sent it on to...

My husband, Michael, and I had a wonderful time in Italy for the recent Winter Olympic Games. For those interested in attending the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, I have a few tips.

CoSport (196 Route 202 N, Box 905, Far Hills, NJ 07931; 877/457-4647 or www.cosport.com) is the official ticket distributor for the upcoming Olympics, offering complete air/land packages as well as tickets only. Previously, it was Cartan Tours (Manhattan Beach, CA; 800/818-1998 or www.cartan.com), whose...

The April ’06 issue carried a very well done, highly informative report (pages 65-68) by a La Jolla reader who enjoyed a 5-day “Flanders Fields” tour by a British company. American visitors to this area should include a visit to Flanders Field Cemetery, one of the many cemeteries in Europe that are maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).

I participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Flanders Field Cemetery last summer, and this summer I will participate in a...
