Travelers' Intercom

I read Rick Steves’ 2007 “Scandinavia” guidebook looking for tips on transportation between Norway and Sweden. I decided to try the train, booking passage from Oslo to Stockholm (a 5-hour journey) for July ’07.

Via the Internet, from ACP Rail International (www.acprail.com) I purchased standard-class tickets for two adults for $105 per person. My son (under 12) traveled for free.

I specifically requested three seats with a table so we could face one another. We ended up with...

On a Grand Circle Travel trip to Lapland, we saw these graves. The white “flowers” that cover them are actually lichen. — GRACE NEWMAN, Ponte Vedra, FL

Being a widow and loving to travel, I sometimes have the problem of finding a suitable travel partner. I usually go with my daughter or one of two friends, but on occasion all three of them are unavailable for a trip.

A couple of years ago, after I had two trips canceled because my usual travel partners had complications, my daughter found www.leisurelinkup.com (Edgewater, MD; 410/956-3552).

I was quite hesitant to use any online site to search for a travel partner, thinking...

My wife, Dorothy, and I were trying to decide which tour company to take for a tour of the Chilean fjords and Patagonia.

Our initial thought was to go on the Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) tour “Chilean Fjords & Patagonian Wilderness”; we were 6-time travelers with OAT and 4-time travelers with their sister company, Grand Circle Travel (GCT). However, we also were interested in the “Patagonian Frontiers” tour offered by Odysseys Unlimited. We had learned of Odysseys through the...

My wife and I took an almost 3-week-long tour to Egypt and Jordan with Vantage Deluxe World Travel, Jan. 20-Feb. 8, 2008, at a cost of $10,248 for two, including round-trip airfare from Washington, D.C., to Cairo.

This was advertised as a 5-star trip. It involved two cruises, one on the Nile and the other on Lake Nasser.

I’d say the Nile ship, Crown Empress, was 3-star, not 5-star. This was confirmed by walking through other ships, as they were tied up one next to another; some...

Nine months out, on Dec. 6, 2006, my wife and I called US Airways directly and purchased three tickets for a Sept. 8, 2007, flight from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Philadelphia and on to Venice, Italy, with return from Rome on Sept. 24. For the three of us we paid $5,521 for full-fare economy-class tickets, then upgraded to business class using frequent-flyer points.

Being proactive, we often checked these reservations online. On one check a month or so before the trip, the...

I want to relate an incident that occurred on Aug. 4, 2008, at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in France.

We had taken a shuttle from the Hilton to the check-in area. It was not until we received our boarding passes that we realized we had left a carry-on bag on the shuttle bus.

As soon as we cleared security, I explained the problem to the clerk at the Air France lounge. She checked with Lost & Found and discovered the bag was there but said it was too close to boarding time...

My wife, son and I rode the Glacier Express (www.glacierexpress.ch) from Zermatt to St. Moritz, Switzerland, on June 2, 2008, and we were planning on renting a car in St. Moritz to drive to Bolzano and Lago Maggiore in Italy.

Our AAA travel agent advised us that the train would not arrive in St. Moritz until 5 p.m. and that the Hertz rental agency, located about five miles from the train station, closed at 5:30. I decided that it would be close, but, since Swiss trains are “never late...
