On Aug. 10, a man identified as an Algerian national drove his car into a group of soldiers in a Paris suburb, injuring six. The man was captured by police near Boulogne. The incident is being described as a terrorist act, but the man, who is a legal resident of France, has no known connections to any terrorist group.

At least eight people are missing and presumed dead after a landslide swept down the slopes of Piz Cengalo mountain, a popular Alpine hiking spot on the border between southeastern Switzerland and Italy, on Aug. 23. Several hikers were rescued from mountain cottages where they had taken refuge.

The landslide barely missed the Swiss village of Bondo, which was evacuated thanks to landslide alarms that had been installed after a 2012 landslide on the same mountain. 

A passenger train struck another passenger train head-on in Alexandria, Egypt, on Aug. 11, killing at least 41 people and injuring more than 120. One train was traveling from Port Said, the other from Cairo. At the time of the accident, one of the trains had stopped due to a malfunction. The cause of the accident was still being investigated as of press time but had been described as “human error.”
