• More than 42,000 people were evacuated from the area around the Mount Agung volcano in eastern Bali, Indonesia, as geologists feared it was about to erupt. Authorities issued a 7½-mile-wide “exclusion zone” around the mountain. Just outside of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, a deadly mudslide occurred on Sugar Loaf mountain in the early morning of Aug. 14, killing at least 500 people, with more than 800 still missing from the mudslide and associated flooding. The slide left almost 3,000 people homeless.

As of press time, torrential rain was still affecting Freetown, causing flooding in the streets and damage to houses and infrastructure.

As of press time, at least 1,200 people had been killed and more than 40 million people had been directly affected by the summer monsoon season of 2017 in the South Asian countries of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. 

Most of the deaths were caused by flooding or landslides, which also destroyed tens of thousands of homes as well as multiple hospitals and schools. Flooding damaged hundreds of thousands of hectares of farm and pasture land.

In the Rakhine State of Myanmar, Rohingya militants attacked 30 police posts with bombs and guns on Aug. 25. In the attacks, at least 100 people were killed, including 12 security officers.

Followers of a popular Hindu guru protested violently in the northern India city of Panchkula on Aug. 25, setting fire to cars and fighting with security forces, after he was convicted of two counts of rape, dating back to incidents in 2002. During the riots, at least 38 people were killed and more than 5,000 arrested, all believed to be followers of the guru.

A man drove a van into a crowd on the Las Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona, Spain, on Aug. 17, killing 16 people and injuring more than 100. The driver fled the scene, carjacking a vehicle nearby and killing that vehicle’s driver in the process.
