Volcano warnings

• More than 42,000 people were evacuated from the area around the Mount Agung volcano in eastern Bali, Indonesia, as geologists feared it was about to erupt. Authorities issued a 7½-mile-wide “exclusion zone” around the mountain. Signs of an impending eruption included regular tremors, indications of rising magma and a column of smoke that ascended from the mountain on Sept. 24.

Mount Agung last erupted on the island in 1963, when it killed more than 1,000 people.

• On Sept. 28, 10,000 residents of Ambae, a northern island in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, were evacuated when the island’s volcano, Manaro Voui, began to spew ash and volcanic gas.
