Travelers' Intercom

Louise and Bob Messner at Torc Waterfall in Killarney National Park, Ireland.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a letter about traveling independently in western Ireland, Sept. 12-20, 2017, utilizing B&B vouchers.

For our second night in Ireland, and still in County Clare (June ’18, pg. 14), my husband, Bob, and I stayed at the comfortable Glasha Meadows B&B (www.glashameadows.com), on the outskirts of Doolin.

Heading to Tralee, we drove by the Cliffs...

Editor’s note: This letter will be presented in two parts, one about the planning and one about the trip.

Early in 2017, my husband, Bob, and I started to plan our annual fall trip to Europe. We had been receiving a weekly email from Travelzoo (www.travelzoo.com/top20) listing the week’s top 20 deals. This newsletter gives us an idea of what’s available. We decided that we wanted to explore the west coast of Ireland: the Wild Atlantic Way.

One of the...

Those readers who are fans of the British TV show “Doc Martin” and who are planning a trip to England may want to visit Cornwall, where the show is filmed.

My friend Dennis and I found a place to stay listed on Airbnb.com in the village of St. Minver, just 6 miles from Port Isaac, the location used in the show. In July 2017, we stayed four nights at Sanderling Bed & Breakfast (Rock Road, St. Minver, Wadebridge, England, PL27 6PP, U.K.; phone +44 7811 803043, www....

Before we embarked on a 2-week South America cruise with Oceania Cruises, my husband and I were fortunate enough to spend three days and two nights in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the Algodon Mansion (1647 Montevideo St.; phone +54 11 3530 7777, www.relaischateaux.com/us/argentina/algodon-buenos-aires).

Our stay at this 10-room boutique hotel was the most fantastic experience of our entire trip!

A Relais & Châteaux property in the heart of Recoleta, the hotel is a 1912...

I am subject to severe motion sickness during ship and air travel. After searching for years for a substitute for Dramamine, I found Sea-Bands in a drugstore in the US. When I wear them properly and follow directions on the carton, they work very well.

As an example of how effective I’ve found Sea-Bands to be, in the fall of 2008 I was on a flight landing in the Denver airport at the tail end of a storm. The hundred-passenger plane was being thrown up and down and sideways....

After weeks of touring Central Asia, my friend Scott and I stopped in fascinating Istanbul for a 3-day visit on our way home.

Despite gray skies and intermittent rain, on Oct. 25, 2017, we enjoyed our visits to the usual tourist sights, finishing with the Topkapı Palace complex. Afterward, Scott wanted to explore the Galata area while I wished to revisit the Grand Bazaar. Both of us are experienced travelers, so we split up.

It began to rain, and I was a bit tired after all our...

If you enjoy walking through walled old towns, seeing snowcapped mountains and miles and miles of olive trees and visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are not crowded with travelers, head to the bottom of the “boot” in Italy.

“Undiscovered Adriatic: Eastern Italy, Venice, Puglia & Malta” was the title of the small-ship cruise around that area that my husband, Thom, and I took with Grand Circle Cruise Line, or GCCL (Boston, MA; 800/221-2610, www.gct.com...

Street in Bruges, Belgium.

On my first solo trip to Europe (not ignoring my friend Ernie, who travels in my carry-on with me), May 12-24, 2017, I visited  Amsterdam (May ’18, pg. 29), Bruges and Reykjavik. In this letter, I’ll just talk about the Belgium and Iceland portions of my trip.

Traveling from Amsterdam, Netherlands, my rail trip to Bruges, with a train change in Brussels, was seamless. A taxi to my hotel, the Grand Hotel Casselbergh (Hoogstraat 6; www.grandhotelcasselbergh.be/en), cost...
