Claudia Kelly with village dancers near Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, central-eastern India.

A trip to the tribal regions of Odisha (formerly Orissa until 2011) and Chhattisgarh states in eastern India, Jan. 15-30, 2018, was my third to India, and it was like traveling back in time.

The remote tribes were interesting and colorful beyond my expectations. Tattooed and pierced women seemed to not mind being photographed up close. At the weekly markets, where everything from cows to cabbages was being sold, there were no Westerners in sight.

The accessibility of these...

Have you ever wanted to travel to a very remote place but thought it was a good idea to have someone help with the plans? Well, my husband, Fred, and I did. Our desired destinations were Robinson Crusoe Island and Easter Island.

We chose Chilean Special Journeys, or CSJ (Palacio Concha, Av. Concha y Toro 44, Barrio Concha y Toro, Santiago, CHILE; phone, in the US, 888/345-6077, www.chileanspecialjourneys.com), from an advertisement in ITN. We could not have chosen better!

Our first stop during a May 2018 cruise around the British Isles was St. Peter Port on Guernsey. Online, we had booked a tour there with Tour Guernsey (Barnabe Ltd., Market St., St. Peter Port, Guernsey, England, GY1 1HB, U.K.; phone +44 778 1423 616, www.tourguernsey.com), whom we recommend enthusiastically.

Guide/driver Andy Taylor operated a Land Rover that had been modified into a safari-type vehicle with raised seats and open sides. (It had plastic covers and blankets, if needed...

Guide in Dubrovnik

During a half day of free time that we had in Dubrovnik, Croatia, while on a wonderful tour of the Balkans with Overseas Adventure Travel, my friend Cheryl Cohen and I took a private tour. Our tour guide, whom we found through Viator.com, was Vesna Barisic (vbarisic.dubrovnik@gmail.com).

On Viator, I had searched for "Jewish tour of Dubrovnik," and Vesna's "Dubrovnik Jewish Heritage Private Walking Tour" popped up. For June 28, 2018, booked through Viator...

Trip to the Netherlands

My husband, Bernie, and I decided that, after we took a 24-day cruise aboard the Seven Seas Voyager and stayed a few days in the United Arab Emirates, we would go west to make it an "around-the-world" trip.

From Dubai, we flew to Amsterdam via Istanbul. Istanbul's international airport was confusing and chaotic, with people sleeping on benches and on the floor and others at the gate making lots of noise. But it did have a peaceful lounge, which...

The grand entrance to the stairs to the bridge level — Sydney. Photos by Lorenz Rychner

The majestic Sydney Harbour Bridge is probably the most photographed site in Sydney, rivaled only by the Sydney Opera House.

Few visitors realize the bridge can be crossed on foot in about 20 minutes and that the southeastern pylon is open to the public, rewarding a fairly short climb up a flight of stairs with wonderful, 360-degree views from a viewing platform. I’ve taken many visitors up there, and nobody has yet been less than enthralled.

Once inside the pylon,...

While on a 14-day Panama Canal voyage aboard Holland America Line’s Oosterdam, Oct. 21-Nov. 4, 2017, my husband, Richard, and I participated in an onshore excursion in Colombia titled “Cartagena by Land & Sea.”

We learned about the 4-hour excursion in an email sent to us by Holland America about six weeks before the cruise. We booked the excursion on the ship for $89.95 per person.

The tour’s written description offered on the ship described the...

My husband, George, and I took Value World Tours’ Holland and Belgium “Tulip Cruise,” April 21-28, 2017, on the river ship Bellejour.

One thing I thought travelers should know — the weather was quite cool and windy in both Holland and Belgium (as low as 9°C up to a high of 15°C [48°F-59°F]), and our cabin, number 122, had little heat. Cold air came from the vents.

We were finally able to obtain some extra blankets, but, even with that,...
