Travelers' Intercom

My wife, Dorothy, and I traveled through the Western Pacific in September ’10, visiting Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Fiji, Guam, Chuuk and Palau. Many of our flights were on Air Pacific, and while in flight the airplane cabins were sprayed with insecticide.

The spray was nontoxic, BUT it caused the lenses of our lightweight plastic eyeglasses to craze and fog! We had to have the lenses replaced.

Also of note — the departure tax for Palau has been raised to $35 per person....

I’m a volunteer for Travelers Aid (202/546-1127, www.travelersaid.org). This charitable organization, founded in 1914, has information desks and helps travelers at 36 sites in the US, mainly in airports but also at bus and train stations.

I’m one of 300 volunteers at Washington Dulles International Airport. (All staff are volunteers; program managers are paid.) We have three information desks in the main terminal manned daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. plus volunteers behind podiums in the...

After flying 18 hours on Cathay Pacific from Los Angeles to Manila via Hong Kong, I continued on Philippine Airlines (PAL) to Bacolod, located on the island of Negros in the Philippines.

I was met by Racquel, to whom I had been “introduced” five years before by Rick Zander, a California Rotarian (Rotary International member) living in Bacolod. I had supported Raquel through college, and her graduation from nursing school was the reason for this April ’09 trip. This was our first face-...

Flying Continental from San Francisco via Houston, my companion George and I arrived in San José, Costa Rica, on Oct. 26, 2009.

I did a lot of research while planning this trip and wanted a car rental so we could be more flexible and independent. In my search I found the Adventure Inn Hotel (phone 506 2239 2633, www.adventure-inn.com), whose location, near the airport, could not be better.

They offered to pay our taxi transfer from the airport and gave us a 10% discount for...

Lois Sundeen asked readers to write in on hostels (June ’10, pg. 14).

While we usually stay in B&Bs or apartments when we travel, we discovered hostels two years ago in Prague and Budapest and this year stayed in one in Madrid. We have been very happy with these accommodations. All arrangements were made via e-mail.

Hostal Gonzalo (Calle Cervantes 34, 28014 Madrid, SPAIN; phone +34 914 292 714). This hostel is in an excellent location just three blocks from the Prado...

During a trip to Eastern Europe, my husband, Eugene, and I stayed at a wonderful, small hotel called the Klezmer-Hois (Ulica Szeroka 6, Kazimierz, 31-053 Kraków, Poland; phone/fax [+48 12] 411 12 45, www.klezmer.pl), May 1-8, 2010.

Located in the Kazimierz (Jewish Quarter) of Kraków, it is the epitome of charm, the dining room giving the feel of being in your grandparents’ home — tables covered with crocheted lace cloths, lovely pictures covering the walls, comfortable old furniture,...

My friend Mary and I stayed at the Windsor Martinique Hotel (Rua Sá Ferreira 30, Copacabana CEP 22071-100, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; phone 55 21 2195 5200, fax 2195 5222), about a half-block off the Copacabana beach, March 22-24, 2010.

The staff spoke English and was very friendly and efficient. Even though the check-in time was 1 p.m., they gave us our room immediately when we arrived hours early.

Our room was modern, well equipped and comfortable. Three nights cost us $486,...

A group tour of Western Europe I took in fall 2010 included a visit to Amsterdam. While there, several tour members tried marijuana, bought from one of the coffee shops.

They did this during their free time. Earlier in the day, the tour leader had explained the purpose of the coffee shops.

Several tour members carried their marijuana with them as we continued on by tour coach to more countries.

For the record, the range of ages among tour members was 32 to 80.

At...
