In Prague, the delightful Unitas Hotel (Bartolomejska 9, 11000 Praha 1, Czech Republic; phone 00420 224 230 533), built in 2008, is more than worth the price: €109 to €139 (near $148-$188) for a double, depending on the season.

Its rooms, air-conditioned, are incredibly spacious and have a kitchen corner with a refrigerator, microwave, dishes, silverware and a coffee pot with supplies. Included in the price is an extremely generous breakfast with omelets, pancakes, cheeses, breads,...

After a tour of France in May ’10, my wife, Rose, and I stayed at the charming but small Hotel du Champ de Mars (7 rue du Champ de Mars, Paris 75007; phone +33 1 45 51 52 30) for three nights.

The hotel is in a wonderful neighborhood with lots of sidewalk cafés always busy with people, plus markets, shops and a bakery or two. There are two Métro stations nearby, and you can walk to the Eiffel Tower although it’s about eight or ten blocks.

Our room was very small but nicely...

My wife, Vera, and I stayed at the Etap Hotel Valence centre (65 Av. du Tricastin, 26000 Valence, France; phone +33 892680673), Oct. 7, 2010.

It is located beside the highway (A7 l’Autoroute du Soleil) as it follows the Rhône south. Through windows with blackout curtains to block the light, you can see the river traffic as well as the highway, but you can’t hear anything due to airport-hotel-style, soundproofed double windows.

Cheap at €48 (near $66) for two, it was clean, with...

When our group of 12 reached Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina, during ElderTreks “Adriatic Adventure” tour in September 2010, half of us had the pleasure of staying at Pension Botticelli (Muje Bjelavca br. 6, 88000 Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina; phone +387 36 319 057 or 63 890-658), just a three-minute walk from Mostar’s Old Town.

At Pension Botticelli, I truly had the feeling of being a guest rather than a tourist or traveler. All five guest rooms in this private home were on the...

After my two teenage sons and I took the wonderful “Rhine Getaway” cruise from Viking River Cruises in June ’10, we took the train in Switzerland from Basel to Lucerne for a two-night stay.

We stayed at Hotel des Alpes Luzern (Furrengasse 3, CH-6004 Luzern; phone +41 [0] 41 417 20 60), just over the bridge from the train station. It’s in the Old Town and we walked everywhere.

It cost CHF600 (near $627) for a triple for two nights, including breakfast. (Single rooms from CHF130...

On our way to a week in Umbria in September ’09, my husband, two friends and I debated descriptions of the various villas along the tourist trail and decided on a visit to the Villa d’Este (Piazza Trento, 5) in Tivoli, ground central for villas.

We made our way to the center of the city and discovered that we were practically at the doorstep of Villa d’Este. (Entry, €10 [near $14] adult; closed Monday.)

Our guidebook emphasized that the villa, itself, didn’t have much to offer...

Syria isn’t often visited by Americans. My wife, Arlene, and I first traveled there in 1999 and were so impressed with the country’s historical, archaeological and biblical treasures that we decided on a repeat visit in February 2010.

We traveled with Voyages Jules Verne (21 Dorset Sq., London, NW1 6QE, U.K.; phone +44 20 7616 1000). The cost of our eight-night group tour, “From the Apostles to the Crusades,” was $3,281 each, which included air from London to Damascus. We upgraded...

I first traveled to West Papua, New Guinea, Indonesia, 19 years ago when it was called Irian Jaya. I hiked steep trails to villages, slept on the floors of longhouses in headhunter/cannibal territory and wondered at the never-ending variety of penis gourds that were the dress for men, complementing the women’s grass skirts.

In June ’10 I traveled to West Papua with a friend. Perhaps not surprisingly, I discovered that it has made tremendous strides in catching up with the “modern”...
