Visitors to Bergen, Norway, can enjoy daily, half-hour lunchtime concerts in Troldsalen, the chamber music hall located on the grounds of the Grieg Museum. A bus tour, departing daily from the Tourist Information office in the city center (Strandkaien 3) at 11 a.m., transports visitors to Troldhaugen (pictured above), the former home of the 19th-century composer and pianist Edvard Grieg. The ticket price of NOK250 (near $33) per adult includes the round-trip bus transfer (20 minutes each...

As an experienced traveler, I was taken aback by several, albeit minor, challenges when using Brussels’ Metro (subway) during a November 2014 visit. My wife and I were expecting a metro system as simple to use as that in Paris, but that was not the case.

In my line of work, using OE (operational experience) is an important tool with which to communicate lessons learned in order to avoid future mistakes and problems. Consider this article OE for travelers using the...

In the letter “Used BA Miles for Hotels” (Jan. ’15, pg. 15), a subscriber mentioned the high fees charged for an international flight on British Airways (800/247-9297, www.britishairways.com). I had the same experience on a round-trip flight from Chicago to Oslo, Norway. The cost was 100,000 Avios (BA’s frequent-flyer miles) plus $1,800. I promptly canceled the booking.

So where did we go wrong? The airline alliance oneworld (www.oneworld.com), which includes British Airways, has a...

A few years ago, my husband, Bernard, and I spent time in Germany along the Mosel River when the grapes were ripening. We had great memories of that trip so decided to visit there again. We flew into Amsterdam in September 2014, rented a car at the airport and headed off.

On the Internet, I had found the Mosel-Landhaus Hotel Oster (Moselweinstrasse 61-63, 56814 Ediger-Eller, Germany; phone +49 0 26 75 232, www.hotel-oster.de). We stayed two nights and paid €72 (near $81) per night for...

I travel overseas about three times a year. I don’t usually write reviews, but when I do, it’s because it’s an exceptional hotel or place.

I stayed for one night in Casa El Edén (Calle Esmeraldas Oe 3-30 y Guayaquil, Quito 170401, Ecuador; phone +593 2 228 1810, www.casaeleden.com) on Dec. 30, 2014.

Situated in the heart of Quito, this excellent hotel is a 5-minute walk from the Central Market and the spot where people meet for the city’s free walking tours.

From the...

To begin 10 weeks of travel in sub-Saharan Africa, my wife, Carolyn, and I wanted a place to stay near Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. After seeing a subscriber’s recommendation in ITN (Aug. ’13, pg. 15), we chose Sunrock Guest House (11 Park Street, Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa; phone +27 11 394 3772, www.sunrock.co.za). I recommend the Sunrock. While the surroundings are not great, it’s a wonderful place.

Then, for our 12-day land trip to Kruger National...

My wife and I enjoy attending classical music concerts when traveling internationally. Purchasing tickets for these events can be problematic, however.

In early 2009 I ordered, through a ticket agency, two tickets to a year-end ballet at the Vienna State Opera. They promised delivery in November. When that date arrived, they stated that they had been awarded an insufficient number of tickets; they refunded my money. When I wrote an email to the Austrian Consul in Washington, DC, I was...

Ireland and Scotland were on the list of places my husband, Ed, and I wanted to go. Early in 2014, David McGuffin’s Exploring Europe (Middleburg, FL; 800/570-1351, www.davidmcguffin.com) ran ads in ITN for small-group tours (12 people or fewer), including an “Ireland & Scotland” tour. A small group sounded good, so we signed up.

The tour, May 11-24, 2014, cost us $3,479 (with a $100 discount, since we paid by check), including the flight from Ireland to Scotland, hotels,...
