In the Dordogne region of France, my wife and I had the privilege to stay for seven nights at Moulin de la Ville (Le Village, Beaumont-du-Périgord, France; phone +33 5 53 22 47 35, www.moulindelaville.com) in September 2014.

This small chambre et table d’hôte (similar to a bed-and-breakfast), which we found through TripAdvisor.com, is run by a British expat couple, Sue and Steve. They’ve transformed the former mill, set on five acres of land at the edge of the village of Beaumont-du-...

My wife, Dee, and I began our trip to Russia on May 8, 2013, when we flew Delta Air Lines from Fort Myers, Florida, to New York, then took Aeroflot to Moscow.

Our first few nights in Russia were spent in the 25-story Cosmos Hotel (150, Prospekt Mira, Moscow, 129366, Russia; phone +7 [495] 234 10 00, www.hotelcosmos-moscow.com), located near the city’s All-Russia Exhibition Centre.

From the hotel, we walked across a multilane road to the exhibition center, a very large...

After attempting to learn Spanish and Portuguese in many countries in Central and South America and taking a crack at Russian in Ukraine, I decided it was time to try Chinese, specifically, Mandarin. I knew that, at the age of 76, it would be a challenge, but what the heck?! You’re only young once.

Through the Omeida Language College (71-72 Longyue Rd., Yangshuo, Guilin, Guangxi, China; phone +86 0773 8827999, www.omeida.org), I got in touch with the coordinator Anya. In...

In a rental car, my husband, Bernard, and I toured the Loire Valley and Normandy beach areas of France in September 2014, staying in two excellent B&Bs. You’ll want to have GPS to locate these.

• The first B&B, located near the Normandy beaches and not far from the abbey Mont Saint-Michel, was Le Manoir les Quatre Etoiles (Turqueville, 50480 Sainte-Mère-Église, France; phone +33 233 10 27 70, www.quatre-etoiles.net).

This is an old farmstead with landscaped areas for...

We enjoyed reading Steve Jones’ article with tips on driving in Europe (Feb. ’15, pg. 43). On the subject of needing a special vignette (sticker) to drive on Switzerland’s national highways, we would add that Austria also requires a vignette for any vehicle traveling on its motorways and highways.

Unlike Switzerland, Austria offers vignettes for varied time periods: a 10-day pass for €8.70 (near $10), a 2-month pass for €25.30 and a 12-month pass for €84.40.

Like their Swiss...

I read the letters in the last few issues about how travelers have their pets cared for while they’re away.

After our cat died 15 or so years ago, we made a pact to have no pets so we could be free to travel anytime with no worries.

Instead, we enjoy the lizards, birds, squirrels, raccoons, snakes, frogs, turtles and occasional opossum that live outside around our home. They are free in the wild and we are free to travel.

I want to thank Elizabeth Pugh-Zaleski for her travel tips on drying clothes more quickly after washing them (Feb. ’15, pg. 47). I’ve found that the hardest things to dry are men’s socks, for which a hair dryer works very well. You can fit the nozzle inside a sock and dry it from the inside out.

Also, if your hotel room has a window that gets sunlight, you can hang or lay clothing on the windowsill. The sun will help dry clothes much more quickly.

I returned from a month-long holiday in Argentina in January 2015, and an item that I took along for the first time will be a constant in my luggage on future trips.

The Stuff Travel Pack, from the recreational equipment store REI (www.rei.com), is a lightweight (10 oz.) daypack that, at 6½"x10"x18½", is the perfect size for carrying a water bottle, guidebook, sweater, umbrella, rain gear and a snack.

The straps are super-comfortable, and the sturdy, rip-stop nylon fabric...
