In the Copenhagen International Airport, at Kastrup, is a new lounge, the CPH Apartment (phone +45 32 31 34 74), designed to resemble a modern city dwelling. The lounge is located past security check-in at Terminal 2 and open 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. The DKK169 (near $32) entry fee covers use of computers, WiFi and recharging outlets plus hot and cold drinks, snacks and fresh fruit.

To mark 60 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the UK is holding the Diamond Jubilee during 2012. Main celebrations, June 2-5 (official holidays). Among events — pageant, Windsor Castle; BBC concert, Buckingham Palace; 1,000-boat flotilla on the Thames; “Big Jubilee Lunch” in many towns, and lighting of beacons (bonfires) in many places.

The Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery in The Hague will present the first survey exhibition ever of the work of Carel Fabritius, Rembrandt’s most gifted pupil, Sept. 25, 2004-Jan. 9, 2005. The life of this young and ingenious painter ended tragically in 1654 with the enormous explosion of the municipal arsenal at Delft. About 15 paintings will be brought together for the first time.

At least 83 hippopotamuses died in Queen Elizabeth National Park in southern Uganda in June and July. An outbreak of naturally occurring anthrax was blamed. The park is home to over 5,000 hippos, and officials are working to prevent the spread to other animals.

The infection has stayed well clear of areas visited by tourists. The most likely way for a human to catch the disease in the park is by contact with or consumption of a diseased animal.

On Jan. 20, two boats with explorers and film crews set off from Kampala, Uganda, on a journey that will cover 6,690 kilometers from the source of the Nile to the river’s mouth in Alexandria, Egypt. The river connects East Africa with the Mediterranean Sea.

In Tiberias, on the Sea of Galilee in Israel, a 15-minute, Vegas-style light show is held three times a night, year-round, weather permitting. With music, lasers, pyrotechnics and 30-foot dancing jets of water, video presentations are displayed on two huge “water screens.” The free show can be viewed from the south end of the Tiberias Promenade at 8:30, 9:30 and 10 p.m.
