For 30 years, travelers who wanted to get involved in short- or long-term overseas projects in education, construction, the environment, community development, etc., or to help the disabled have turned to Volunteers For Peace (Burlington, VT; 802/540-3060).

Hundreds of projects in more than 45 countries are available. For a typical two- to three-week project, the fee for lodging, food, accident insurance and administration is $300. Volunteers stay in dormitory-type accommodations.

An approaching comet designated Q4 (NEAT) is expected to be more than 2½ times brighter than Halley’s Comet. It will be brightest May 5-15, 2004, and the Seabourn Legend is making a 7-day Mediterranean cruise in May to provide ideal viewing conditions. During the “Hiroshima Dreamination” festival in Japan, Nov. 6, 2010-Jan. 3, 2011, the city center will be strung with more than 1.3 million colored lights, and designers will compete at creating lighted “monuments” (a dozen or so).

The Posture+ by BackJoy Orthotics (Greensboro, GA; 800/222-5569) is a portable sitting device designed to prevent pressure points from developing by tilting your pelvis upright and distributing your weight evenly. I tried the product over several weeks while working and did have a more upright posture when sitting and a decrease of pressure on my tailbone.
