Sea City Museum (Havelock Rd., Southampton, Hampshire, SO14 7FY, U.K.; phone 023 8083 3007) has two permanent exhibitions. “Southampton’s Titanic Story” focuses on 500-plus families who lost family members in the tragedy and on the city’s role in the steamship industry. “Gateway to the World” tells of the various peoples who passed through the city, from Roman traders to Victorian industrialists. £8.50 (near $14) adult or £6 senior. Quito, Ecuador's, new Mariscal Sucre International Airport, in the Tababela district 12 miles east of the city center, was scheduled to begin operating in February. The airport replaces the older, more centrally located Mariscal Sucre International, which, due to its being surrounded by mountains, is unable to be expanded to accommodate increased air traffic or larger aircraft.

The UK’s first designated City of Culture is Derry, Northern Ireland, with more than 266 events scheduled in 2013, including sports, dance, theater, art, film, storytelling and historical reenactments. Most are free.

For example, the city will host the Highland Dance Festival in April. In August, the Derry Regatta will hold a month-long rally of traditional sailing yachts, and the Fleadh Cheoil na h’Éireann, the world’s largest festival of Irish music, will be held.

Until Sept. 6, 2013, “Picasso of Málaga. Earliest Works,” with 53 pieces painted by Pablo Ruiz Picasso during his youth, is being held at the Museo Picasso Málaga (Palacio de Buenavista San Agustin, 8, 29015 Málaga, Spain; phone [34] 902 44 33 77). 

Picasso was born in Málaga in 1881 and spent his childhood there. There is also a selection of his later work plus 35 works by other artists inspired by the city. Permanent collection, €6 ($8), and temporary exhibits, €4.50, or both, €9. Over age 65, 50% off.

Even if you’ve never sat on the back of a horse in your life, you can learn to play polo at the Capilla Polo Club (Ruta 39 km 7, Capilla del Señor, Buenos Aires, Argentina; phone +44 20 7096 7682).

For a day, a week or longer, the club offers placid horses for beginners as well as polo ponies suitable for more advanced sportsmen. Each morning is devoted to “stick and ball sessions” (English speaking), and there are chukkas each afternoon. Students can stay on site in a traditional estancia-style house or in a local hotel or an hour away in Buenos Aires.

At Mystic Mountain, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, you can race through the rainforest at speeds up to 25 mph on a one-person bobsled. A run down the 3,281-foot track costs $62; 10% discount on tickets bought online. (Ship passengers should buy tickets from their cruise line.) Children must be at least 46 inches tall to ride. Addressing medical care on the front during the First World War through diaries, letters, literature, photographs and objects, the exhibition “War and Trauma — Medical Care in WWI” will be on display in the In Flanders Fields Museum (Lakenhallen - Grote Markt 34, B-8900 Ieper, Belgium; phone 32 057 239 220) in Ypres, Belgium, Nov. 11, 2013, to June 30, 2014.

On Rapa Nui, aka Easter Island, the Tapati festival will take place Feb. 1-15, 2014. The festival has competitions based on ancient sports, which include a triathlon and horse racing. In one competition, called Haka Pei, participants slide down Easter Island’s steepest hill on banana tree trunks. There also are parades, music and dancing.
