This year in Italy’s province of Parma, the annual Verdi Festival will celebrate the 200th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Sept. 30-Oct. 31. The program will include events and performances at the Regio Theatre of Parma and the Verdi Theatre in nearby Busseto.

Performances include the operas “Falstaff,” “I masnadieri” and “Simon Boccanegra.” The composer’s “Requiem Mass” and other compositions also will be performed.

• Turkey will join the list of countries valid for Eurail Global and Eurail Select Pass travel when TCDD, the Turkish railway company, becomes a member of the Eurail-pass system on Jan. 1, 2013. Although Turkey is accessible by train from Bulgaria, be aware that construction work will affect some routes until fall of 2013.

• Westbahn, which offers hourly passenger train service between Salzburg and Vienna, will be the first private railway company to join the Eurail community. Beginning in January, holders of Eurail passes can ride its high-speed trains between the two cities.

In the Norfolk town of Deepdale, visitors can rent bikes for exploring the countryside. Deepdale Bike Hire (Deepdale Farm Cottages, Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk PE31 8DD, United Kingdom; phone 07747 618424) is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Bike rental costs £16 for seven hours or £10 (near $16) for three hours. Includes helmet, pump, lock, repair kit and self-guided routes.

The Observatorio Astronómico Andino, or Andes Astronomical Observatory (Camino del Bollenar 21.974, Lo Barnechea, Santiago; phone +56 02 -221 514 59) outside of Santiago, Chile, offers tours of the facility.

A tour in English starts with a presentation entitled “Discovering the Universe,” then participants may take turns gazing at the cosmos through binoculars, mid-size computer-controlled telescopes or sensitive telescopes used for astrophotography.

The Spanish rail company Renfe has announced the Renfe Spain Pass. The pass, valid for six months, is activated on the first rail journey. Within the next month, travelers can make 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 more trips, depending on the type of pass chosen. It can be purchased online or at stations. A 4-trip pass costs €163 (near $215) and a 12-trip pass, €392 ($515).

Quito Tour Bus (phone 2435 458 or 2458 010), the city’s first double-decker tourist bus service, allows passengers to hop on and off at 12 bus stops throughout the city. 

The 3-hour ride, departing daily from Ave. Naciones Unidas every hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., covers all the major attractions in the north and center of the city. 

A one-day ticket, available at the Tourism Information Office at Foch Square and a number of other locations in Quito, costs $12 for adults and $6 for seniors, disabled travelers and children (those under 5 are free).

Sea City Museum (Havelock Rd., Southampton, Hampshire, SO14 7FY, U.K.; phone 023 8083 3007) has two permanent exhibitions. “Southampton’s Titanic Story” focuses on 500-plus families who lost family members in the tragedy and on the city’s role in the steamship industry. “Gateway to the World” tells of the various peoples who passed through the city, from Roman traders to Victorian industrialists. £8.50 (near $14) adult or £6 senior. The 80th anniversary of Hitler’s rise to power is being commemorated in Berlin in 2013 with events and exhibits, including pillars in public spaces adorned with biographies and photographs of people who left their mark on pre-1930s Berlin.
