Planning to go to Iquitos in Nov. Any tips ?

Has anyone been successful lining up a local boat for a few days

on the Amazon from Iquitos ?

Iquitos is a small river town. There is a main square (with nearby hotels) where artisans sell their crafts. In my opinion, one night is all you would need there. Be aware that weather -- frequent storms, fog,etc -- can be a problem so flights are sometimes delayed or cancelled. If you do a cruise, plan on spending one night in Iquitos before embarking.I didn't do a cruise, but stayed at the Explorama lodges (www.explorama.us). There are five along the river and you can buy a one week package that includes staying at three of them -- each of which is a different type of experience. You'll have your own guide for tours, which are included. They are owned and managed by former Peace Corps volunteers and they train and employ locals for tour guides and boatmen.. There are also other, shorter itineraries, but the week program will give you a really good look at the Amazon.

Hi,I took a 7 day cruise up the Amazon from Iquitos in 1998 with International Expeditions. The scenery and wildlife is wonderful, but be aware that this is a remote area with few sevvices. Be sure to check the background and services offered by different companies.
