Whilst I hesitate to recommend a totally reliable firm or individual for Heathrow transfers, I have suggested to friends visiting from the US that they try the Internet (as I have done, despite being a raw beginner with this technology). Just “Google” some appropriate phrase, such as “London Heathrow cabs,” and try a few of the listed sites.

I came up with prices under £40 (near $62) for central London and around £45 out to Wimbledon (where I live). My friend used one of these and was very happy with the price and service, but some companies change hands, so it’s best to check each...

My husband, Jim, and I took a month-long road trip through northern Spain and Portugal, May 24-June 23, 2011. After picking up our car in Biarritz, France, we drove into Spain and visited Bilbao in the Basque country; La Rioja (famous for its red wines); spectacular, Yosemite-like Pico de Europa, and the region of Galicia, with its rugged coastline and the Christian pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela.

In Portugal, Montesinho Natural Park has wonderful views and hiking trails. We also toured the Douro River Valley, explored Coimbra and Porto and stayed in the area of the...

From 1821 to 1914, more than 44 million people left Europe heading for North America, and, of those, over seven million sailed from Bremerhaven, Germany. To trace their travels, in Bremerhaven the Deutsches Auswandererhaus, or German Emigration Center (Columbusstrasse 65, 27568 Bremerhaven, Germany; phone +49 [0] 471/9 02 20 0 or fax 9 02 20 22), has been open to visitors since 2005.

My husband, Karl, and I visited this harbor-side museum on July 4, 2011. The DAH was the winner of the European Museum of the year in 2007 and we could see why.

I have lived and worked in Germany for the last 28 years and have become a seasoned European traveler.

You can get around easily in Germany via the train. It is very fast, timely and efficient. In the ’80s it used to take four hours to get to Paris from the outskirts of Germany, but now, on the ICE (bullet train), it takes a mere 1¾ hours. There are still regional trains with several stops, but the ICE trains make fewer stops.

At www.deutschebahn.de, you can plug in your departure and destination cities and find out how long the trip takes plus the cost and whether or not...

As a US citizen originally from India and now a tour company owner, I am writing regarding the November ’08 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

I should be angry at the terrorists for subjecting so many families to horror by killing and injuring innocents. I should be angry at the politicians in India for having failed to provide the safety and security that citizens and visitors expect. How can a handful of men armed only with guns and grenades cause so much damage in human life and property?

But this is not the time for finding fault. It is time to celebrate the good deeds of the...

To arrange our trip to Peru, April 28-May 13, 2009, my husband, Graham, and I followed a reader’s recommendation (March ’08, pg. 55) and decided to use the services of Eliu Campos and ECS Travel (Los Pinos St. 156 Of 502, Miraflores, Lima 18, Peru; phone +51 1 242 9716, e-mail info@ecstravel.com or visit www.ecstravel.com).

We are very glad we did. Prompt in responding to e-mails and very responsive to our wishes, Mr. Campos put together an excellent custom tour for us.

The price was $3,100 per person, which included five flights; 14 nights in 4-star hotels and one night in a...

Cruising the canals of Europe in a narrowboat and seeing a part of the continent that not too many people see was a dream of mine. I liked the idea of operating a boat by ourselves rather than being on a floating hotel, and going at the high speed of two to three miles per hour would be easy.

My traveling companion, Pam, and I decided to rent a narrowboat for a week and tour an area of southern France. Incidentally, the amount of French that we could speak was very tiny.

Internet research revealed many companies offering cabin cruisers for rent, but narrowboats seemed to me...

I had the pleasure of taking an outstanding 20-day tour of Papua New Guinea with ElderTreks (Toronto, Ontario, Canada; 800/741-7956, www.eldertreks.com), Sept. 3-23, 2008. The land price was $8,995.

Most companies “do” PNG in 10 to 14 days and tour perhaps a festival and the main cities. ElderTreks’ 20-day program was the only group tour I found which spent three days on Kiriwina in the Trobriand Islands and two nights in a village setting on the Sepik River.

ElderTreks’ Nitin Dhami was a superb guide; he also guides their trips in India. Rex Opa, a national guide from Mt....
