Travelers' Intercom

For part of a trip to Southeast Asia, our travel agent arranged for my wife, Pnina, and me to have, in Cambodia, an independent tour guide: Sopheap Bung (16D, St. 2003, Phum Chamka Ouloeuk, Sangkat Kakap, Khan Pau Senchey, Phnom Penh, Cambodia; phone 85512894155 or 855978828155 or email bpheap@hotmail.com or bpheap@yahoo.com).

Every day of our visit, Jan. 18-22, 2013, Sopheap arrived with an air-conditioned car, with driver, at about 8 a.m. and returned us to the hotel between 4 and 6 p.m. We visited sites in and near Phnom Penh, Udong (Oudong) Mountain and Battambang as well as,...

My husband, Ed, and I love learning about the history and culture of a country so tend to gravitate toward natural history and folk or open-air museums. In April 2012 in Arnhem, the Netherlands, we toured the Openluchtmuseum (Sept. ’12, pg. 53) and on another day enjoyed the Zuiderzee Museum (Wierdijk 12-22, 160 1LA Enkhuizen, NL; phone +31 [0] 228 351111, fax 351212).

Parking at the port in Enkhuizen cost €5. The ticket for the passenger ferry from there to the site plus entry to the museum cost €14.50 (near $18) per person, which included a guidebook and map (all in English)....

A cove on the rugged coast of the Crozon peninsula — Brittany, France.

We have visited France 30-some times but until recently had stayed only in hotels, mainly family-run places in small towns. We had noticed attractive vacation cottages for rent but learned that they generally go for a week at a time and almost always Saturday p.m. to Saturday a.m.

This never quite worked for us until 2012, when everything fell into place: flights, train schedules and an available rental near sufficient history/scenery/restaurants to keep us busy for at least a week. We flew to Paris, took the TGV to Brest, rented a car and drove about an hour to our gîte near...

My wife, Carol, and I took the 15-day “Legendary Turkey” tour with Odysseys Unlimited (Newton, MA; 888/370-6765), May 29-June 13, 2012. The cost, including round-trip air from San Francisco, was $4,592 per person.

I found Turkey cleaner (and a good deal more stable) than Greece. And since it’s not in the European Union (yet) and has its own currency, it’s cheaper than many vacation destinations in Europe.

Here are some of the preconceptions people seem to have about Turkey.

It’s dangerous. To be sure, there are neighborhoods in Istanbul where a tourist should not...

In Paris, I ate dinner on consecutive nights at Septime (80, rue de Charonne, Paris, 11, France; phone +33 01 43 67 38 29), Oct. 2-3, 2012.

There’s no menu. The fixed-price meal, different every night, costs €55 (near $75), with drinks extra. The waiter explains each dish in English. They serve a meat dish, a fish dish, two appetizers and a dessert — just the right amount of food. My total bill the first night was €89 and the second, €94.

There are two sittings nightly, starting at 7:30. This small place is considered by some to be one of the best restaurants in the world,...

The stave church from Gol at the Norsk Folkemuseum in Oslo, Norway, has been dated to at least AD 1212.

When in DENMARK, consider purchasing a Copenhagen Card (at tourist information centers and selected hotels, hostels and 7/11 stores in Copenhagen or online).

On our September ’12 trip, my husband, David, and I each bought a 24-hour card to “get out of town.” That may sound strange, but the cards work on the regional trains as well as in the city and we wanted to see two castles that day: Frederiksborg (the “Danish Versailles”) and Kronborg (“Hamlet’s castle”).

We paid DKK249 (then $42.20) each for the cards. (...

After a couple of weeks in Spain, my wife and I were heading for the Madrid airport on May 1, 2013, for our flight back to Boston.

We had planned to take the Renfe train from the Sol Metro stop but decided instead to ease the trip by grabbing a cab, so we climbed into one near the Sol station and asked the driver how much it would be. She pointed to the meter. Off we went to Terminal 4 at the airport.

Upon our arrival, the meter read €33 (near $44) and some change. I handed the driver €50 and she gave me back a €0.20 (27¢) piece. I asked for the rest...

During a trip to West Africa in June ’12, I spent 11 days in Senegal. In Dakar, I was fortunate to use the guide services of Massaer Dieng (e-mail dieng.massaer@yahoo.fr), who goes by “Ali.” He is knowledgeable, experienced, very personable and speaks English well. I used him for six days during my stay and was very happy with the experience.

Ali works with his friend Abdou, who is an excellent, experienced and friendly driver. (“Friendly” is not unusual in Senegal, I found.) Abdou drove us in his 4-passenger taxi.

Ali’s services were arranged for me by the woman who ran...
