Riding camels to the Great Pyramids.

My wife and I spent a month traveling independently in Israel, Jordan and Egypt in March ’10. We engaged several very good guides along the way, but we were especially impressed with our Cairo guide, Samir Fayek (phone +2 0122 399 5147, samirfayek@hotmail.com). Samir showed us a number of interesting sites that were well off of the normal tourist path, and his English was excellent. We really enjoyed the very special way that he arranged for us to see the Great Pyramids of Giza. While thousands of people were streaming into the site by bus, we took the back way in by camel. It...

While in London in March 2013, I visited mainly free museums (donations welcome), and one that stands out in my mind is The Wallace Collection (Hertford House, Manchester Square, London, England, W1U 3BN, U.K.; phone +44 [0] 207 563 9500).

This fantastic small museum should be one of the top 10 sites to visit in London, but it appears to be a hidden gem. Looking through a guidebook, I noticed that it is filled with a private collection of art, in the same manner as Sir John Soane’s Museum (13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London; phone +44 [0] 20 7405 2107).

I...

My two daughters and I stayed in three hotels in September-October ’11. (All prices given are current as of September ’12.)

• In Rome, Hotel Papa Germano (Via Calatafimi 14/a, 00185 Rome, Italy; phone +39 0648 6919, fax 0647 825202) is a 5-minute walk straight down from Termini train station. The rate for a triple room is €110 (near $143).

The room was small but clean, with a bathroom. The included breakfast was really good — more than just coffee and a roll. Internet access was free, and Papa was usually around to give you any information you needed. He even gave us a bottle...

I took a 15-day tour, “New Zealand Experience,” with AAT Kings Tours/USA (Anaheim, CA; 866/240-1659). It started on Oct. 8, 2012, and was a wonderful trip, with excellent guides and excellent hotels.

I bought this tour through Travel Downunder (Bellevue, WA; 866/258-1629), which also arranged my flights. The owner, Wendy A. Schatz, was prompt with her emails and very helpful.

Including 12 dinners, a lunch or two and all breakfasts, the tour cost $4,710. Airfare from New York City was $1,986, and insurance added $414. AAT Kings offers roommate matching; if they don’t have a...

For our stay in Bangkok, Thailand, during an independent trip to Southeast Asia, my husband, Earl, and I followed the recommendation of an ITN reader (“Woman Driver in Bangkok,” April ’12, pg. 32) and contacted Rat of Rat Service (phone [66] 08 9108 2170, email rat_bkk@yahoo.com).

Rat now owns a B&B (747/3 Soi Sudprasert 8, Chareun Rat 8 Rd., Bangkok 10120; phone 02 675 2170 or the Rat Service number), where we stayed Nov. 22-26, 2012. We paid THB1,200 (near $40) per night for the two of us, which included a cooked-to-order breakfast.

The B&B is in a neighborhood...

After a 3-week tour (No. “CE-2”) of Central Europe in May ‘12 with Adventures Abroad (Blaine, WA; 800/665-3998), which was wonderful, my husband, Bob, and I flew from Prague to Venice on Air One ($100 for both tickets) for a 5-day stay.

We took a vaporetto into the city, getting off at the San Zaccaria stop. It was about a 3-block walk to our hotel, Locanda “Al Leon” (Campo Santi Filippoe e Giacome, 4270, 30122 Venice, Italy; phone +39 041 2770393, fax 5210348).

We were about a 5-minute walk from St. Mark’s Square, yet it was very quiet. We stayed in the Locanda annex,...

Following a 10-day self-arranged tour of southern Italy, my wife, Jean, and I stayed in a splendid boutique hotel in Rome, May 31-June 4, 2013.

Located in a lovely mid-city neighborhood, My Guest Roma (Viale XXI Aprile 12, 00162, Rome, Italy; phone +39 06 86 32 4590 or mobile +39 349 355 6758), though small, provided a restful stopover.

The nice-size rooms, kept spotlessly clean, were colorfully and tastefully decorated and most comfortable. Some rooms had added bunks — helpful if you’re taking children.

The en suite bathroom, while on the compact side, nonetheless...

My wife, Betty, and I paid $6,800 to 2AFRIKA, Inc., for the 13-day tour “Affordable Kenya & Tanzania.” We booked our own airfare.

The tour originally was scheduled for May 2012, but a few weeks before the trip was to begin, 2AFRIKA owner Kenneth Hieber informed us via e-mail about a warning issued by the US Embassy in Nairobi regarding possible terrorist attacks. Other tour members were planning to cancel or had canceled, and our trip was rescheduled for Nov. 5-17, 2012.

2AFRIKA had originally contracted with Liberty Africa to provide local safari services. In October...
