Kimberly Edwards’ letter “Tips for Communicating in Japan” (Nov. ’10, pg. 12) contains a lot of good advice, much of which is applicable throughout Asia. From my own experience, I would add an additional suggestion: never ask a question that can be answered with a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’

The person behind the desk often will have no clue about what you are asking, but his or her response will almost invariably be ‘Yes,’ because a ‘no’ or a request for clarification would be insulting to the distinguished foreign visitor (that’s you!).

For example, if you are trying to find out whether...

A couple of readers who are going to the Summer Olympics asked for information on travel in Greece. I have been to Greece 20 times in the last 20 years, most recently in October ’03. I have traveled independently there and gotten to know many wonderful Greeks. In addition to discovering delightful places to stay, I have found the Greeks to be the most hospitable of people. Here are some of my suggestions on things to see and do there.

Near Athens are many interesting sites, such as ancient Corinth, Mycenae (going back to 14 to 15 centuries before Christ), Epidauros and the beautiful...

We took an eastern Mediterranean cruise aboard the Azur, Oct. 29-Nov. 8, ’03. It was booked through White Travel Service (127 Park Rd., West Hartford, CT 06119; phone 860/233-2648). The price of $3,006, for my wife and myself, included airfare from New York’s JFK to Venice, Italy, with port charges and taxes added.

Ports of call were Dubrovnik, Katakolon (for Olympia), Alexandria, Limmosol, Antalya, Rhodes and Piraeus (Athens). The shore excursions were optional, and we opted, for the most part, to take the less expensive half-day excursions, as about all that the full-day...

We took a great “Burgundy barging” trip with Odysseys Unlimited (85 Main St., Ste. 101, Watertown, MA 02472; phone 888/370-6765, fax 781/370-3699 or visit www.odysseys-unlimited.com) in September ’03.

We shared a marvelous chemistry with our fellow passengers, the crew of La Litôte (our barge) and our guides. We also enjoyed the food.

Unusual was the fact that there wasn’t enough water in the canals of Burgundy for our trip. Instead, we cruised the Canal de Briare, the Canal du Loing and the Seine River — a memorable trip!

I would like to address those who avoid renting cars in countries where driving is on the left-hand side of the road. I feel it is not necessary to miss out on the pleasures of independent travel in these places.

My wife, Nancy, and I have rented cars in numerous countries where they drive on the left, and we consider the extra stress to be minimal. In many instances, it is easier to drive in those countries than in some others because signage is usually in English and the roads often are well marked.

Being from a rural area, I am used to manual transmissions, so we always...

My friend Mary and I stayed at the Windsor Martinique Hotel (Rua Sá Ferreira 30, Copacabana CEP 22071-100, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; phone 55 21 2195 5200, fax 2195 5222), about a half-block off the Copacabana beach, March 22-24, 2010.

The staff spoke English and was very friendly and efficient. Even though the check-in time was 1 p.m., they gave us our room immediately when we arrived hours early.

Our room was modern, well equipped and comfortable. Three nights cost us $486, buffet breakfasts included. Free Internet in the room.

The front desk was helpful in providing...

Each Sunday afternoon at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, there is a free organ concert for about an hour. Starting between 4 and 5 p.m., depending on the time of year, each concert presents a guest organist from one of the cathedrals of Europe.

We always attend this concert whenever we visit Paris. They print a schedule for each month listing the organist and which pieces will be presented. We like to get there early to get seats because often there is standing room only.

The organ has 6,000 pipes and a sound you will never forget. TONI & BRUCE STAFFORD Manhattan...

My husband, Albert, and I highly recommend touring Japan with Journeys East (Middletown, CA; 800/527-2612, www.journeyseast.com). We’ve taken their in-depth “Farmhouse to Teahouse” tour twice, in October ’04 and ’09, and the second time around it was, if possible, even better.

The places we went, so carefully selected, the way we went — all the logistics handled smoothly on trains, buses and taxis, without a care on our part — and the overall tone of respect and appreciation for the culture were A+++!

Warning: don’t expect a laid-back, lots-of-free-time, read-three-novels-...
