Travelers' Intercom

I can’t believe that on my first trip to Rome, about 20 years ago, I carried shoe polish and a travel iron! Since then, I’ve condensed what I take, traveling with a carry-on only and doing laundry as I go along.

I agree with other travelers that wrapping wet laundry in a towel and wringing it helps it dry faster. But rather than carry laundry soap from home, I do my laundry with whatever is available in the hotel — from shampoo to cakes of soap — and my clothes look just fine.

I always have Adventure Center (1311 63rd St., Ste. 200, Emeryville, CA 94608; phone 800/228-8747) arrange my air tickets when I book air and land together; it may cost me a few bucks more, but it is well worth it!

As I was traveling last year for 10 months, Adventure Center had to fax me in New Zealand when my upcoming tours (air too!) to Bhutan and Nepal were canceled. When there are any changes or cancellations on the air tickets, Adventure Center takes care of these at no cost to me.

My son and I went on the 19-day “Heart of India” tour with Overseas Adventure Travel (Cambridge, MA; 800/493-6824, www.oattravel.com), Oct. 27-Nov. 14, 2009. For me, India was not primarily about the castles, ruins, museums, shrines, etc.; it was the atmosphere.

While at the Ranthambore Game Preserve we had about given up on seeing a Bengal tiger, but at the end of our game drive we came upon one just getting up from its nap and strolling off. Magnificent — a sight I’ll never forget!

The Nahargarh Hotel, where we stayed on the preserve, was remarkable — a great white palace...

I would like to commend a tour company that “stepped up to the plate” when plans went awry.

On our Nov. 18-Dec. 10, ’03, trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji with smarTours (New York, NY; phone 800/337-7773 or visit www.smartours.net), a last-minute change in itinerary created a major scheduling fiasco during our two days in Cairns. The result was that we would be unable to go to the Great Barrier Reef unless we forfeited a prepaid $300 for another excursion.

My husband and I opted to book our own day trip to the reef and hope to recoup our losses after we got back to the...

ITN asked its readers for essays centered on the subject “Travel is. . .” in 250 words or less. Small prizes were offered for the best five. We were hit by a flood of responses — and the writing was so good, we decided to increase the number of prize winners and print not just the top five but the top 10.

We selected for judges three well-read people: Steve Venables, owner of the travel agency Woodland Travel in Woodland, California; ITN Associate Editor Mary Beltran, and the very well-traveled retired attorney Judith Anshin of Sacramento.

I stopped in the room while the...

After visiting Argentina in November ’10, my wife and I flew home to Charlotte out of Buenos Aires’ Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) on Continental Airlines. I will compare our experience to that of another ITN subscriber who returned to the US through EZE in February ’07 (Sept. ’07, pg. 44).

Good news — the departure tax was included in the cost of our airline ticket. One less queue!

It’s still true that you can wear your shoes while passing through the security checkpoint. There was no requirement to remove liquids and computers from our carry-on luggage for the x-ray...

For a week’s stay in Paris, Feb. 27-March 6, 2010, I found the Paris Métro system just excellent.

There were long lines of tourists trying to comprehend the ticket machines plus long lines of people buying tickets from humans. It seems that all the manned ticket booths are being replaced by machines. I carried a copy of the reader’s letter “Buying Paris Métro & Bus Tickets” (Nov. ’09, pg. 12), just in case.

I went on an excellent, one-day trip to Mont-St-Michel from Paris for €166 (near $231) with Gray Line. I’d been told it was impossible to do in one day, but with Gray...

It was through an ad in ITN years ago that we first found the greatest travel agent ever, Pannir Murugesu.

In March of 1996 we (a party of four) went to Bangkok, Bali and Hong Kong; the package we booked was offered in an ad by Natrabu Indo-American Travel. At that time, Pannir Murugesu was with Natrabu and that is where we came to know him. We took another three trips through Pannir at Natrabu: a 5-island tour of Indonesia in October-November ’97, Bali in April ’99 and Bali and Malaysia in April ’00.

In April-May ’01 we went to Bali, Australia and Malaysia on a package that...
