En route to any of a dozen destinations in Africa, chances are you’ll need a layover in Johannesburg. For years I’ve used the deluxe airport hotels for convenience, that is, until I discovered Sunrock Guest House (11 Park St., Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa; phone +27 11 394 3772, fax 088 011 394 3772).

In May ’13, after a 17-hour nonstop flight, I exited baggage claim at O.R. Tambo International and found the driver from the Sunrock holding a sign with my name. In 10 minutes I was in the lobby of the guest house being greeted by two friendly dogs and a macaw named Buddy...

My husband, Mike, and I stayed in Brittany at Gîte Lapin Kerguedalen (Kerguedalen, 56160 Ploërdut, Bretagne, France; phone +33 [0] 297394228). During planning, e-mails were answered promptly, and the owners accepted PayPal, which makes things easier. We paid €400 (near $510) for eight nights, Sept. 23-30, 2012, and were sent detailed directions to find the property.

This place was fantastic! The owners, Inge and Remco, were a joy. They live on the property and were always available but not intrusive. Inge welcomed us with a bottle of wine plus fresh eggs from her hens, then...

For our stop in St. Petersburg, Russia, June 21-23, 2012, during Oceania Cruises’ 14-day Stockholm-Dover cruise aboard the Nautica, our group of 12 preferred to have a private guide rather than take the ship’s big-bus tour. An ITN subscriber had given rave reviews (April ’09, pg. 59) to the guide Natalya German Tsarkova (phone +7 921 391 1894, email natalygerman@gmail.com, www.original-tours.com). I contacted her in January.

As have other ITN readers, we slightly modified Natalya’s standard 3-day tour. We paid $430 each, which included a Russian visa, the guide services of Natalya...

On the day we planned to visit Mont-St-Michel it was rainy, so we headed for a nearby town described in our Michelin guidebook, Villedieu-les-Poeles. In this town, where pots and pans have been made since the 12th century, the bell foundry has been casting and exporting bells for over 200 years.

My daughter, Debra, and I spent a lovely weekend in the beautiful city of Barcelona, Spain, Oct. 19-22, 2012, staying at the 5-star, 18-room, boutique Hotel DO: Plaça Reial (Plaça Reial 1, 08002 Barcelona, Spain; phone +34 934 813 666, fax 933 020 970), located a very short walk from La Rambla. She found it on the Internet, and the cost for three nights was €700 (near $923), including VAT.

Although the hotel was beautiful, the room comfortable, the service impeccable, the included breakfast superb and the “pillow menu” interesting (you can choose what type and firmness you like),...

Bacolod-style broiled chicken is comfort food for Filipinos and for me as well. As served at Bacolod Chicken Inasal (multiple locations), dinner is a quarter chicken (you choose breast or leg) and unlimited rice. For PHP150 (about $3.50), it’s a great deal.

Traditionally, you eat with your hands — not just the chicken but the rice too! Inasal restaurants, throughout the Philippines, are clean and bright, with hand-washing stations.

For PHP50 more, you can top off the meal with halo-halo, an ice cream sundae full of goodies on a bed of shaved ice.

At David’s Fresh Noodle (No. 213 13th Street, Phnom Penh, Cambodia; phone 855 12 351 890 or e-mail som_bath@yahoo.com), I had the best restaurant food of my three weeks’ stay in Phnom Penh, Nov. 4-23, 2012.

This little place was clean, with maybe eight tables, and there were many choices, not just noodles. I had fried calamari and hand-cut French fries that weren’t at all greasy for $2.90 plus a Coke for $1.

The restaurant was just a short walk down 13th Street from the National Museum. The owner runs a children’s charity (Palm School of Tom Village in the Tom Community of...

Like Jack and Anne Dini (“Returning to the Homeland: Albania,” Oct. ’13, pg. 52), my companion and I also followed the advice of Carol Probst (“Albania — Enjoying Europe Without the Costs and Crowds,” Dec. ’12, pg. 36) and took a tour with Albania Travel Net (Him Kolli str. 35, Pallati Agolli, Tirane 1003, Albania; phone +355 42247518) and guide Enea Kumi.

We toured Albania, Macedonia and Montenegro, Sept. 28-Oct. 8, 2013, and found Enea’s services to be excellent. Since that information has already been discussed, I thought ITN readers might like to know what they’re likely to find...
