During my four weeks in Vietnam and one week in Cambodia, Nov. 28-Dec. 10, 2008, I was very pleased with a product I had purchased prior to leaving, the SteriPEN® Traveler (Hydro-Photon, Inc., Box 675, Blue Hill, ME 04614; 888/783-7473, www.steripen.com).

Throughout the trip, I did not buy any bottled water and instead drank tap water or ordered just “a glass of water” with each meal, in each case sterilizing it with the SteriPEN® before drinking.

Claiming to destroy 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa when used as directed, the SteriPEN® exceeds the US EPA Guide Standard...

My sister and I have traveled the world extensively for the past 25 years, including to several third-world countries, and have not personally encountered the same degree of crime as we did in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on a week’s visit starting July 3, 2009.

My sister had her wallet stolen in the Modena Café, which is situated behind the National Museum of Fine Arts. It was taken from a purse on a chair while we were taking a quick photo of a nearby wall decoration.

In the time it took us to return to our hotel to call the credit card company, half an hour, the thief...

My two daughters and I traveled to Moscow in October ’08. Via the Internet, we had arranged for an apartment with Uncle Pasha, aka Paul or Pavel or Pasha Voytinsky (www.unclepasha.com). His website was attractive and he quickly answered our e-mails. We requested a room for three people, close to the metro, at $100 per night.

When we finally arrived at the apartment (identified as “Street Skakovay, the house 15/1, apartment 5. A floor 1 — underground stop ‘Belarussky’”), we were met by Valentina, who spoke no English. My daughter had to talk with a translator on the phone.

The...

A short time ago I decided to evaluate a range of upper- to middle-price compact binoculars best suited for travel. My final choice was the quality, ultraclear Zeiss Conquest Compact, 8x20 model.

Priced around $330, it is sold at select camera and sports stores and at www.zeiss.com. To compare prices from various sources, Google “Zeiss Conquest Compact binoculars.”

Strolling along Avenida del Libertador in Buenos Aires on an April-May ’10 trip to Argentina, I passed a building identified as the Automóvil Club Argentino (1850 Avenida del Libertador, Buenos Aires; phone 0800 777 2894), easily identified by the yellow flags out front and the steady stream of locals coming and going to renew their driving permits and tend to other bureaucratic business.

On a whim, I doubled back and entered the lobby. A pair of vintage Fords flanked the sunlit marble room, including a stunning 1908 touring model and an open-top race car from the 1920s. The body...

My husband, Ed, and I always have an ID on our suitcase carrying handle plus another luggage tag taped onto either the bag or on the pull-behind handle. Why two luggage tags? In case our luggage is lost and one tag has been pulled off, there is still another one to be read.

As we are leaving home, on each ID we put our name and the name and address of our first location abroad. We do not want our luggage going back to our house when we are in, say, Russia.

For our return trip, we remove those hotel address tags and put on our home address ID tags, which we’ve kept inside our...

As a tour operator, I was on Midway Atoll in March ’11 escorting a group of 15. Part of the Hawaiian Archipelago, the atoll is an unincorporated US territory, but everyone needs a valid passport to visit, even US citizens. Midway is probably best known as the site of the Battle of Midway, during WWII the turning point of the war in the Pacific.

The atoll is part of — and is the only access to — Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world. The coral reefs, islands and waters of the monument provide...

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful trip through Ireland and Northern Ireland, Aug. 7-28, 2010, orchestrated by Conn O’Scannlain, owner of Journey Through Ireland (University Place, WA; 800/828-0826). Conn has 35 years of experience and is super-friendly and super-knowledgeable.

Along with being in specific locations on particular dates, we wanted to tour on our own or with a private guide and, if possible, to spend more than one day in each location, using it as a base to see surrounding areas.

I gave Conn my list of cities and sights on our wish list and he created a...
