My husband and I took a NEW ZEALAND vacation in March ’04 that focused on their national parks. At Tongariro National Park, we decided against staying at the Grand Chateau within the park (small, dark, overheated rooms) and instead stayed in the nearby town of Ohakune.

We spent the night at the beautiful and well-appointed Cairnbrae House (140 Mangawhero Rd., Ohakune, North Island, New Zealand; phone [06] 385 3002, e-mail peterm@cairnbraehouse.co.nz) and absolutely loved it!

The home owners were friendly and gracious and had many suggestions for hiking trails, etc. The...

My husband and I prefer an apartment to a hotel when we visit our favorite city of Paris, FRANCE, so in October ’03 we signed a contract with Barclay International and made full payment for a one-week stay in April ’04. Two weeks before our trip, the apartment was removed from the market and Barclay was unable to find an equivalent place.

However, we had the great good fortune to find, on the Internet, France By Heart (Box 614, Mill Valley, CA 94942; phone 415/388-3075, fax 415/388-3074, e-mail josette@francebyheart.com).

Ken and Josette Varcoe, who operate this site, were...

Queenstown, set along the gorgeous, blue-green Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the beautiful Remarkable Mountains, should be on every New Zealand visitor’s itinerary. It offers golf, sailing, paragliding, jet boat riding, bungy jumping and more. The dress code is casual, with hiking boots common.

Here, we found the Queenstown Parkroyal Hotel (Beach St., Queenstown, South Island, NEW ZEALAND; phone +64 143 442 7800 or e-mail res1@queenstown.parkroyal.co.uz) to be a delightful surprise. We stayed there Feb. 23-26, ’04, following a cruise from Chile on the MV Discovery.

Four of us took a 5-week trip to Germany, Switzerland and Austria, June 3-July 10, ’03. We had first-class railpasses and by the end of the trip had taken 74 trains, 12 local buses, one tour bus, seven taxis, five trams, eight boats, four subways, four funiculars, two cable cars, five personal cars and four vans. The following establishments were the ones that were most outstanding.

• At Gästehaus Am Römerbad (56856 Zell-Mosel, GERMANY; phone 06542/41602), the landlady, Elizabeth, was very sweet and hospitable. We had a private room with shower, toilet and sink. It was immaculate!...

Denny DéMartelaere celebrates his birthday at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich.

During our independent driving tour from Prague to Rome in May-June ’03, Europe was experiencing record high heat.

• In Prague we chose the historic Grand Hotel Europa (Wenceslas Square 25, Prague 1, CZECH REPUBLIC; phone 420 224 228 117, fax 420 224 224 544 or e-mail info@itastour.cz), a 3-star, Art Nouveau-style property dating from 1906. There was an elevator but no air-conditioning.

The rooms were large. €109 ($137) for a double with bath. A substantial breakfast (included) was served in a beautiful, oval-shaped hall overlooking the restaurant/bar below.

• We...

On a quick trip to Portugal and Spain in November ’03, we discovered two beautiful palace hotels.

• Palace Hotel Bussaco (Mata do Bussaco 3050-261 Luso, PORTUGAL; phone +351 231937970, e-mail bussaco@almeidahotels.com) was once a monastery, then a palace and now is a hotel. It was the site of a battle between Napoleon’s forces and the Duke of Wellington. Our lovely room and an outstanding dinner for two with wine and tip cost €209 ($263).

• Tivoli Palácio de Seteais (Rua Barbosa du Bocage 10, 2710-517 Sintra, PORTUGAL; phone +351 21 9233200), built in the 18th century, was...

In April ’04 my husband and I stayed 10 nights at Dive 7000 Resort (Anilao, Batangas, PHILIPPINES; In the U.S., call Bob Furlong at 773/791-1898 or e-mail furlong20@hotmail.com) — a 2-hour drive south of Manila.

The rooms are basic, with two single beds and private baths. Most have air-conditioning. The nightly rate of $115 per person includes the round trip from Manila, all meals and two boat dives a day.

Most of the dive sites are only a few minutes away. The dive boats accommodate four to five divers and a dive guide. The diving is fantastic! We felt very safe, and the...

When visiting Tongariro National Park on NEW ZEALAND’S North Island, my husband and I highly recommend staying at the Cairnbrae House (140 Mangawhero River Road, Ohakune, New Zealand; phone 06 3853002, fax 06 3853374, e-mail peterm@cairnbraehouse.co.nz).

We spent the night of March 5, ’04, at this B&B, the lovely home of Peter and Devon McKay. It’s located in a rural area, and there is a small deer enclosure on the property plus several pets.

There are three rooms available, and we had the spacious “honeymoon suite” with private bath plus a balcony with a fabulous view...
