The Best Western Hotel Carlos V (Maestro Victoria 5, 28013 Madrid, SPAIN; phone [34] 91 531 4100 or visit www.hotelcarlosv.com) is located on a pedestrian street just a minute or two on foot from Puerta del Sol. It is convenient to popular tourist sites, restaurants, shopping and two metro stations.

This 3-star hotel offered a modern elevator and a friendly staff. As we had requested when booking, we were provided with a very quiet room (but located on the back of the hotel with no view). Our double room with A/C and a very comfortable queen-sized bed was reasonably sized and very...

I’ve stayed four times in a wonderful flat in London owned by Ted and Francoise Phillips (6 Tite St., London SW3 4HX, ENGLAND; phone 011 44 7376 7646 or e-mail wonderfulchelsea@aol.com).

The owners are very nice and helpful in many ways.

The flat has everything one would wish for: twin-bedded room, marble bath, washer/dryer, stove, fridge, microwave, broadband Internet access and more. My most recent stay was in September ’07. A single cost £65 ($130) per night.

The location is excellent, about a 5-minute walk from Kings Road, where every kind of shop and eatery is...

For budget travelers to PARIS, we have some recommendations from a wonderful 4-day visit at the end of April ’07.

• Hôtel de Nevers (53 rue de Malte; phone +47 00 56 18, fax +43 57 77 39, www.hoteldenevers.com) is just off Place de la République, about equidistant between Métro stops République and Oberkampf.

A very clean, one-star, family-run hotel with a helpful front desk staff. Elevator. We had a bright room with a double bed, table and chairs, cupboard, room for our suitcases, and a small private bath with shower for €53 ($80) per night. The breakfast of croissant,...

Here are tips from my trip to SWITZERLAND in May ’08.

Rail service in Switzerland is exceptional! Clean trains run on time and correlate with other forms of transport for expedient connections. In the stations are excellent schedule signs noting the times and track numbers.

The 22-day Swiss Pass was a great buy ($668 first class, $446 second). It covered travel on trains, buses, boats; gave half off fares for cable cars, mountain trains and funiculars, and provided free admission to over 440 museums. I bought it before my trip from Rail Europe (800/622-8600, www.raileurope....

My husband, Dick, and I took the “Essential Iran” tour with MIR Corp. (85 South Washington St., Ste. 210, Seattle, WA 98104; 800/424-7289, www.mircorp.com), Sept. 8-17, 2006, and thought ITN readers might be interested in the observations of two ordinary American tourists, a rarity there.

We paid about $2,400-$2,500 each, including flights Tehran-Shiraz-Isfahan-Tehran. In 2007, the 10-day trip costs $2,795 per person for two to 16 travelers.

Our “tour group” consisted of only the two of us plus an Iranian guide. Interestingly, he was a graduate of Marshall University in West...

During our 3-week stay in Italy in October ’06, the most unusual hotel we stayed in was Country House Montali (Via Montali 23, 06068 Tavernelle di Panicale, ITALY; phone +39 075 8350 680, fax 144 or visit www.montalionline.com). I think it might appeal to many ITN readers.

Its exquisite and varied cuisine is vegetarian. The Umbria region of Italy may be a meat eater’s paradise, but even meat eaters like me relish a change. For €80 ($106) per person per day, our half-board included breakfast and dinner — superb cuisine, lovingly served.

Here’s an example of a typical breakfast...

Hotel Italia (Via Venezia 18-00184, Rome, ITALY; phone 06-4828355, fax 4745550 or visit www.hotelitaliaroma.com) is in a safe location in Rome where one can return alone at night from the bus or subway easily. It’s 10 minutes from the train station (Stazione Termini) and a few steps off Via Nazionale, which has bus routes to the Vatican and all stops between. Across Via Nazionale is a grocery for lunch supplies.

We stayed there Feb. 9-11 and Feb. 19-20, 2006. Five adults in one room (a different one each time) paid a total of €135 ($180) per night. Our room had four beds each time...

Here are four accommodations from our trip to ENGLAND, May 7-21, 2007. Our room in each of these featured a color TV and coffee/tea-making facilities.

• Arriving at Heathrow after a short flight from Paris, we took a bus to Reading for £26 (about $52). From the rail station, we took a cab to our first hotel, Express by Holiday Inn (Richfield Ave., Reading, Berkshire RG1 8EQ, U.K.; phone 01189 582 558, fax 582 858 or e-mail ebhi-reading@btconnect.com).

We booked this hotel on the Web. For a twin-bedded room, the “Priority Club” rate (join for free on the Holiday Inn website,...
