With some free time during my January 2016 visit to Costa Rica, I discovered the delightful Turu Ba Ri Nature & Adventure Park (San Juan de Mata de Turrubares, Costa Rica; phone +506 4052 0940, http://turubari.com/en). It’s an ideal place to visit.

The park is only 60 minutes from San José, 10 minutes from Orotina and 50 minutes from the Puntarenas pier. It’s open year-round, Tuesday-Sunday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. The price of a visit is determined by the adventures you...

If you’re taking a cell phone on a trip to another country, be sure to notify your cell phone provider to see if you need to make a change to your calling plan.*

On a recent trip, I got stuck for 24 hours in the Nairobi, Kenya, airport. The airport had no local representatives for US airlines, so I had to call Delta Air Lines in the US to straighten out my flights. To rectify the problem and get a new ticket, the conversation lasted 1½ hours. My phone bill was an extra $...

My wife and I were on the tour “Christmas Markets along the Elbe River,” traveling in Germany with Grand Circle Travel (Boston, MA; www.gct.com), when we stayed at the Maritim Hotel Berlin, Dec. 14-17, 2015.

Soon after our group checked out of the hotel, I realized I had left a small green bag containing a camera, a spare battery, a charger and a new memory card on a ledge above the bed in our room. I advised our trip leader, Maggie Polus, who promptly called the hotel...

The following information is for extremely thrifty budget travelers.

Remember when you could fly to Europe and back for well under a thousand dollars? It wasn’t all that long ago. Well, with new low-cost airlines along with fare wars among the majors, some low fares are back. Some come with severe restrictions, others not so many.

The low-cost airline Norwegian (see below) epitomizes the new trend toward airlines charging for items like meals and baggage. Its slogan is...

My husband and I were having a wonderful time on the “Amazing Myanmar” tour with Jim Cline Photo Tours (San Diego, CA; 877/350-1314, www.jimcline phototours.com) when, on Sept. 29, 2015, in Bagan, I slipped and fell at our hotel in Bagan.

I needed medical attention, and the ground operator for the tour, Santa Maria Travels & Tours (Yangon, Myanmar; www.santa mariatours.com), and their exceptional local guide who was with us, Mr. MM, came to the fore.

Mr. MM...

I took a sailing adventure, the “14-Day Historic Coasts/Canada & New England Discovery,” aboard the ms Veendam of Holland America Line, or HAL (Seattle, WA; 877/932-4259, www.hollandamerica.com), Aug. 29-Sept. 12, 2015.

The cruise embarked from Boston, sailed up the New England and eastern Canadian coastlines, entered the St. Lawrence River and ended in historic Québec City. As a single in a partial-ocean-view stateroom, my total cost for this trip was $5,637.

While visiting Panama with my wife, Sandra, in February 2014, our guide, Daniel Gonzalez (Aug. ’15, pg. 27), told us that only about 10% of tourists actually take a cruise all the way through the Panama Canal, called a “full transit.” That’s a shame, because the original canal, completed 100 years ago, is one of the engineering wonders of the world. I strongly recommend the full transit.

Our arrangements for the trip were perfect. They were handled by Judy...

My wife, Patti, and I had already been to a few Central American countries when we were attracted by a tour advertised in ITN by SITA World Tours (Encino, CA; 800/421-5643, www.sitatours.com). We were interested in “Discover Central America” because it included four countries we hadn’t yet visited.

We chose the Deluxe level of hotels and were generally pleased. (Several of the hotels listed have already changed.) Our tour cost about $4,300 per person plus about $250...
