I read the Feature Article “Rwanda — Finding More than Mountain Gorillas” (Aug. ’16, pg. 46) while I was planning a visit to Rwanda. The author’s vivid descriptions made me excited to hurry up and get there. I did, however, come upon a statement that I would like to comment on. She wrote, “On my next trip, I will take some books or pens to offer to the kids as gifts.”I have been traveling since 1957 and have visited 131 countries. On my honeymoon...

I don’t know what it is about Japan that keeps drawing us there, but, once there, my husband, Clyde, and I are also drawn to Mount Fuji. We often see Fujisan on the high-speed Shinkansen going to Kyoto. It’s visible about 40 minutes after departing Tokyo, if you sit on the right side of the train. However, we prefer the closer view from Kawaguchi-ko (Lake Kawaguchi).Eight months after our stay there in March 2014, when the mountain was continually packed in with clouds (Feb...

From 1953 to 2014, I visited Venice, Italy, eight times. Here is a memory dump of a few things that I think are nice to know if you’re planning to go there.

Hotel Danieli (Castello 4196, Venice, 30122, Italy; phone +39 041 5226480, www.danielihotel venice.com) has charm and location. From the fourth-floor terrace, the reflection of a full-moon streak on the water of the lagoon after dinner can’t be beat.

However, when I was last there five years ago, if...

During my 2016 visit to Venice, Italy, on Sunday, May 15, I sat for two hours underneath the Ponte della Costituzione bridge, near a train station, watching longboats on the Grand Canal participate in the city’s 42nd annual Vogalonga Regatta (www.vogalonga.com/en).One of our own Portland dragon boats had been practicing all year on the Willamette River in preparation for this annual regatta. During the 30-kilometer race, hundreds of boats are paddled around Murano, Burano and other...

When my wife, Paula Owens, and I spent several days in Bogotá, Colombia, in July 2015, our visit was not without hiccups, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. [See “Procuring Cash in Colombia,” Oct. ’15, pg. 12, and “Advice for Visitors to Bogotá,” Nov. ’15, pg. 12.]

We expected a similarly pleasant experience for our July 2016 visit to Quito, Ecuador, especially since both capitals are located in the Andean highlands, with Quito being only...

Magnolia Garden Homestay.

On our initial visit to Vietnam, the first place my friend and I stayed turned out to be exceptional. Beginning Jan. 19, 2016, we spent two weeks at the Magnolia Garden Homestay (75B Nguyen Duy Hieu St., Hoi An, Quang Nam, Vietnam 560000; phone +84 510 3915509, magnolia homestay.com).

It was the high TripAdvisor.com ratings and the “any time” breakfast that prompted our booking with this homestay instead of one of the other choices. (Hat, the father in the household, later...

There is sorrow in my heart for Nice, France. On July 14, 2016, the actions of one man brought terror and tragedy to this carefree Riviera resort.

My grandson visited Nice nine years ago in July, when he was 16 and on a school trip. He remembered the blue water, the seaside restaurants and the topless swimmers.

On my visit in late March-early April 2016, there was no sun but light rain every day. The water was a wonderful blue, the color and intensity of brilliant sapphires....

Are you intrigued by cruising the Caribbean on a small ship, visiting small islands and bays that big cruise ships can’t reach, short of arranging your own private charter? It’s possible to do this, and I was delighted to find the Island Windjammers Company, or IWJ (Acworth, GA; 877/772-4549, www.islandwindjammers.com), owner of three tall sailing ships (motorsailers) ranging in capacity from 10 to 30 passengers.

In October 2015, I took a 12-night repositioning voyage on...
