China had been on my list for a while, but it wasn’t until my husband, Jerry, saw a Viking Cruises brochure that included Tibet that we became inspired. On a trip to Bhutan in 2006, we had heard a great deal about Tibet’s being the source of Bhutan’s Buddhism, so we wanted to learn more about Tibet.I began to research options, but most tours (including Viking’s) were just two weeks and either included Tibet and excluded the Li River and/or the Chengdu panda reserve or...

During a 2-week trip to Italy in May 2016, I spent my final nights at the little Agriturismo Ca’ Beatrice (Via Triestina, 99/A, 30173 Favaro, Veneto, Italy; phone +39 041 635 322, www.agriturismocabeatrice.it), located in the Veneto region.I had booked it again (see Dec. ’14, pg. 31) partly for its proximity to the Venice Marco Polo Airport, as I had a 6:30 a.m. flight out. Even though, when wanting to reach Venice proper, it was a bit of a time-waster to have to take a...

My, oh, my! After reading the readers’ letters about Airbnb (Nov. ’16, Dec. ’16 & Jan. ’17 issues) and all of the hoops some travelers go through to get the right accommodations (corresponding back and forth, checking locations and facilities, arranging payment, etc.), it boggles my mind!My wife and I couldn’t be happier about the satisfying arrangements we make when we travel. We plot ahead of time where we want to stay and how long it will take to get to...

I was issued a Visa debit card through my Chase Private Client account in January 2017. The accompanying material definitely said that the card could be used at any ATM anywhere in the world with no foreign transaction fee (FTF). An ATM fee might be charged, but Chase would reimburse me for that fee.*I’m quite elderly, so any future foreign travels will not be adventurous; nonetheless, I was also very impressed to be given a phone number to call that is manned by a Chase concierge...

Prior to taking a 6-day tour of the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Skye in June 2016, I stayed at the Portree Independent Hostel (www.hostelskye.co.uk) in Portree, Scotland. The tour was with Rabbie’s Trail Burners (207 High St., Edinburgh, Scotland, EH1 1PE, U.K.; phone +44 131 226 3133, www.rabbies.com), and, as a senior, I paid £329 (near $404).A few hours after I was picked up for the tour, we were visiting a castle when our tour leader/driver caught me in the gift shop and...

It was 1983 and our first trip to New Zealand. My wife, Carol, and I were wandering around the South Island in a motor home when we noticed a sign for strawberries. We pulled over, walked to a shed and asked about the strawberries. The owner said it had been too wet that morning, so he hadn’t picked any, but he urged us to take some time to inspect his flower garden. He and I began talking and discovered we both were Rotarians. We were invited up to the house to visit his wife and have...

After cruising down the Red Sea, the ship I was on docked at Muscat, Oman, on Nov. 7, 2016, and I disembarked.Taxi cabs were readily available just outside the dockyard gate, and American dollars were accepted by the drivers, giving visitors the convenience of not initially needing local currency to pay. When I researched hotels in Muscat, it became clear that there were many. I narrowed down my decision based on cost and the part of the city I wanted to stay.I chose Hotel ibis Muscat (phone...
