Following a whirlwind tour of the city of Toronto in July 2016, my family headed for the calming shores of Ontario’s Kawartha Lakes.

My husband, Adrian, and I along with our daughter, Sabine, and my parents — better known as Grandma and Papa — drove northeast for 2½ hours in our minivan. Four-lane highways dwindled to winding backroads, skyscrapers faded into the horizon, and toe-dipping waters rounded every corner.

A small wooden sign, partially...

View of Santiago from the funicular. Photo by Theodore Liebersfeld

I read the Travel Brief item “Santiago Aerial Tram” (May ’17, pg. 4), which reported that the Teleférico de Santiago in Santiago, Chile, resumed operation in November 2016 after being shuttered in June 2009.

At first, I was confused because I had enjoyed awesome aerial views of Santiago from the tram ride in Parque Metropolitano that I took on Jan. 15, 2010, a date that obviously came after June 2009, but the matter was cleared up during my research.

I...

I was reviewing my old copies of ITN to tear out and file articles for future reference when I came across Alan Groudan’s letter (March ’16, pg. 12) regarding his Bank of America ATM card failure in Europe in July 2015. His new ATM-only card worked in the United States but did not work in Europe. This brought to mind an incident regarding my own ATM-only card.

My wife and I are also Bank of America (BofA) customers, and we travel out of the country often. Right before a 6-...

Fish market at Cox’s Bazar — Bangladesh. Photos by Edward J. Sullivan

Most Americans know nothing about Bangladesh, although some may remember the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh (organized by Ravi Shankar and George Harrison) that provided aid to that country, which was reeling from a devastating cyclone and the beginnings of a civil war (the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971) that would result in as many as three million deaths.

While few have visited that area of the world, such a visit is rewarding to the traveler and very helpful to the country.

The...

When my husband, Ted, and I flew on TAP Portugal from Boston to Lisbon, Portugal, in February 2017, we landed at the airport on time, at 7:15 a.m. We were certain we would make our 9 a.m. connection to Barcelona, Spain, where we were booked for both ground transportation to the port and a cruise embarking that afternoon. However, we hadn’t factored in the enormous queue at Immigration in Lisbon.TAP officials invited some travelers to join a fast-track Immigration line and kept telling...

Jean Fischer’s photo of a narrow channel she visited in India’s Kerala backwaters during a cruise ship shore excursion in 2012

To see the “Kerala backwaters” at Vembanad Lake in southwestern India, I booked a 4-day, 3-night trip aboard the MVVrinda (April 13-16, 2016) through my travel agent at Aloha, Seven Seas Travel in my hometown. My agent booked the cruise through Oberoi Exotic Vacations at a cost of $2,062.

(While I do research before any trip and make the initial deposit, I have my agent make the final payment. In the meantime, she has answered my questions, provided assistance, arranged...

Downtown street in Yangon, Myanmar. Photos by Robert Ono

My wife, Betty, and I took an enjoyable cruise from Yangon to Mandalay, Myanmar, in January 2016. We sailed aboard the 56-passenger riverboat AmaPura  on a 14-day, 14-night itinerary with Ama Waterways (Calabasas, CA; 800/626-0126, www.amawaterways.com).

The two of us paid $17,000, which included travel insurance, a Mandalay-Yangon flight and a night’s lodging in Yangon. (We would fly from Mandalay to Yangon after the cruise, continuing to Vietnam for a private tour.)...
