Travelers' Intercom

Over the years, I have traveled to more than 100 countries. In 2018, I decided to visit Bolivia and Lake Titicaca for the first time. I chose to go with Wilderness Travel (Berkeley, CA; 800/368-2794, www.wildernesstravel.com).

I had known of the company for years, but, not being a hiker, I had never used them. This was not a trek but a tour, "Bolivia!," Aug. 30-Sept. 12, 2018, and Wilderness Travel's was the most interesting one I found.

I paid $5,995 plus a...

Blue-spotted ribbontail ray at rest underneath staghorn coral — Red Sea. Photos by Debi's fellow diver Victor

There are several spots around the world that top scuba divers' wish lists, and the Red Sea is most certainly one of them. I was given the opportunity to visit parts of Egypt in July 2018 (Nov. '18, pg. 6 & Dec. '18, pg. 6), and since I was going to be so close to the Red Sea, it was a no-brainer to extend my trip and indulge my passion on my own.

My private transport for the 5-hour drive from Luxor, Egypt, to Hurghada and also my hotel accommodations in Hurghada were...

Sean and Joy Logan in Chile’s Rainbow Valley.

My wife, Joy, and I have a good-sized list of international locations we are eager to travel to. However, Chile was never on that list, that is, until our daughter received an internship in Valparaíso, creating a great excuse to go and visit her, June 29-July 7, 2018.

After doing a bit of research, we planned an action-packed week, staying in Viña del Mar, skiing in Valle Nevado and touring the Atacama Desert.

While Viña del Mar was just OK, we truly enjoyed touring the...

Two of the keeps at Parador de Oropesa in Spain. Photo by Connie Martin

My husband, Paul, and I rented a car in San Sebastián, Spain, and drove to Nerja on the country's southern coast in October 2018. During our several-day drive through Spain, we stayed at two paradores, one in Hondarribia and the other in Oropesa.

Hondarribia was a lovely place, where we had nice views of France from our room. We enjoyed exploring the Old Town there as well. Like the parador in Oropesa, the one in Hondarribia has a fascinating history, but I'm only going to...

To help us prepare for our first trip to Lisbon, Portugal, in July 2018, Simply Transfer & Tour (www.simplytransfer.pt [in Portuguese only]) came highly recommended by a friend of ours who had recently visited Lisbon.

Never wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, we made arrangements with the owner, Andre, for two full-day private tours plus airport transfers. We contacted him three weeks in advance of our trip, finalizing it a week ahead.

For a day trip to towns near...

I traveled to Australia in November 2018 and encountered a new airport security procedure.

In Adelaide, passengers were required to remove umbrellas from their carry-on luggage before the parcels were x-rayed. Umbrellas in carry-on luggage were legal but had to be removed for screening.

I was told that this security procedure now applies at all airports in South Australia and would soon be required in all airports in the country. While I was there, the procedure was not...

A longtime resident of Cape Town, South Africa, I've been providing ITN readers with suggestions for places to visit (Jan. '19, pg. 45). Here are a few places farther from town.

• If you're in Stellenbosch, a university town 45 minutes east of Cape Town, I would recommend visiting the wine estates Cavalli (phone +27 21 855 3218, cavalli

stud.com), in the Helderberg region, and Glenelly (Lelie Street, Idas Valley, Stellenbosch; phone +27 21 809 6440,...

I read with interest the subscriber's article about Churchill, Canada, and the polar bears that she and her husband were able to see there (Nov. '18, pg. 42).

Through a tour operator, the couple stayed outside Churchill at the Tundra Lodge, which, she wrote, "sits 5 feet off the ground, with viewing platforms between cars and access to the Polar Rovers through a back deck. (We were told our feet wouldn't touch the ground outside for the next four days.)"
