Fred Steinberg’s article “Plying the Waters along Norway’s Western Coast” (June ’10, pg. 18) was of particular interest to me since I had just returned from a cruise with Hurtigruten, one aboard the Nordkapp.

The 11-day, round-trip voyage from Honningsvåg to North Cape was part of a tour with Vantage Deluxe World Travel (Boston, MA; 800/322-6677). The tour, May 11-26, 2010, cost over $6,000, including air from New York and single supplement.

For most of the cruise the skies...

I read with interest Fred Steinberg’s article about cruises along Norway’s coast with Hurtigruten (June ’10, pg. 18) and would like to add a few comments. My wife and I traveled on the line’s ship Midnatsol from Kirkenes to Bergen in June 1994 and thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

We spent a full day in Kirkenes before boarding, and we recommend that people do that. Kirkenes is a very interesting place, with lots of history. During World War II the Germans used it as a base to try to cut...

My husband, Fred, and I took a guided, two-week bicycle tour covering parts of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, July 21-Aug. 4, 2009.

The “Baltic Explorer” cost €1,199, then about $1,700, per person (land) and included hotel accommodation for 14 nights; baggage transport; the use of 24-gear trekking bicycles; all breakfasts; dinners on about half of the days; train/bus tickets for the transfers; admission to many museums; two city tours, and road books with detailed...

My husband and our three adult children and I rented an apartment in Friedrichshafen, Germany, home of the Zeppelin Museum, in June ’10. Friedrichshafen is on the shore of Lake Constance, and we took the ferry there from Romanshorn, Switzerland.

We rented through the Internet at the owner’s website (www.ferienhausmiete.de/ferienhaus_suche.php?land=1). Mr. Deutschle met us at the apartment and showed us how everything worked.

The holiday flat was very clean. It had two bedrooms...

My first thought when I arrived in the busy, two-story, glass-topped Munich train station was ‘Wow!’ It has so many interesting places to eat and drink or to buy food to take away plus flowers, postcards and the usual souvenirs.

Just a block away from the station is Fleming’s Hotel München-City (Bayerstrasse 47, 80335 München, Germany; phone +49 89 4444 660, www.flemings-hotels.com), where I stayed May 15-18, 2009. I chose it primarily for the convenient location and its excellent...

Because of a trademark dispute, Elderhostel has dropped the name Exploritas, to which it changed this year (July ’10, pg. 41), and now will run its programs under the name Road Scholar (Boston, MA; 800/454-5768, www.roadscholar.org), a name it has long held.

I went on four Elderhostel programs during the period it was called Exploritas (a name I always refused to use) and, as far as the emphasis toward seniors was concerned, found no real differences in the programs I had selected....

Now 63 and 70, as my husband and I age we are leaning more and more toward traveling independently. We find that we need the luxury of going at our own pace and according to our own interests. Not having to deal with the temptations of big breakfasts and dinners on tours is also a plus.

With more free time, we go less frequently but stay longer, reducing the stress from air travel. We upgrade to business class more frequently, especially on the outbound portion, so we can feel more...

How lucky to have read in ITN about two knowledgeable and wonderful guides: Sergey Tsarapora in Yalta, Ukraine (cell phone +3 8 [067] 262-5160, e-mail sergo22yalta@gmail.com or visit http://sergoyalta.at.ua), and Patrick Peneff in Varna, Bulgaria (e-mail bulgariaprivateguide@gmail.com or visit http://bulgariaprivateguide.com).

Eight months before our cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Jade, our group of 35 people arranged for two vehicles and a tour of Yalta with Sergey. On Oct. 4...
