My husband, Bill, and I took a great tour to Panama, “A Continent Divided, Oceans United,” with Overseas Adventure Travel (Cambridge, MA; 800/493-6824), April 18-May 1, 2010. A good value — the 11-day trip cost $3,495 including air from San Francisco, and a pretrip cost $595.

We saw a great deal of the country, from the skyscrapers of Panama City to the village of the Embera Indians. On a beautiful catamaran with 12 cabins, we took a three-day cruise through the canal that included...

My husband, Norman, and I knew we wanted to hire a tour guide to show us the major sights of Panama City in August 2010, and our trip’s best find was Alvamayita (Alva) Pinzón (cell phone 507 6676 4147 or e-mail alvamayita@yahoo.com).

We called her from the US to discuss our tour needs and her rates and availability. I had researched and called many tour companies recommended in the travel books, so I knew what our tours would typically cost. Prices for Alva’s tours were equal to or...

My wife and I were assigned Juan B. Padilla (mobile phone [505] 86641048 or e-mail juansinmiedo44@hotmail.com) as our guide on four days of our visit to Nicaragua, Dec. 27, 2010-Jan. 3, 2011. We were using a package of hotels and day tours purchased through Tara Tours (Miami, FL; 800/327-0080), which advertises in ITN.

Tara Tours contracted with the Nicaraguan branch of Gray Line (Denver, CO; 800/966-8125) for our hotels; airport-hotel transfers; transfers between Managua, Granada and...

On a 46-day cruise of Spain, Africa and the Caribbean aboard the Prinsendam of Holland America Line (Seattle, WA; 877/932-4259), we stopped in Lüderitz, Namibia. On our walking tour, we saw Goerke House, whose turreted roofs soar right out of the windswept craggy stones.

Hans Goerke was a German military officer and later a diamond merchant who built the house for his bride in 1910. At the time Goerke House was built, fresh water had to be brought in from Cape Town, South Africa, 800...

My fiancée, Maxine, and I spent four great days in London in September ’10. I had been there for business many times during the ’70s and ’80s, but this time it was strictly to enjoy the sights as enthusiastic tourists. It was Maxine’s first visit.

We traveled with another couple, who made arrangements through an online agency for a car from Heathrow Airport to our hotel, the Royal Park in Bloomsbury. (Unfortunately, she does not remember the name of the online agency.)

As our...

My husband, R.C., and I celebrated our 40th anniversary in the fall of 2009 with a trip to Slovenia, Croatia (May ’11, pg. 12) and then to Italy for Sicily.

In planning the Sicilian portion of our trip, I compared the itineraries of several tour companies and got advice from two traveling couples we know, to be sure we hit all the must-see places. We ended up following the Sicily itinerary in the guidebook “Karen Brown’s Italy B&Bs 2009,” and I would recommend that first-time...

I agree 100% with the subscriber’s comment in the letter “Security Absurdity” (March ’11, pg. 29): EZE Airport in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is inconsistent with security.

I have traveled to many countries with my small, nurse’s bandage scissors with blunt tips, part of my first-aid kit. Before I boarded our Nov. 27, 2010, Continental Airlines flight to Houston, EZE confiscated them, even after I tried to show the screener my RN license.

To add to the unfairness, the flight...

Jasmund National Park, on the island of Rügen off Germany’s northeast coast, is noted for its chalk cliffs. We walked up a steepish path to Victoria-Sicht (Victoria’s View). Rising more than 400 feet from the sea, the impressive cliffs were glisteningly white in the afternoon sun.
