For our 30th wedding anniversary, my wife, Janie, decided she wanted to tour the Galápagos Islands. After quite a bit of research on the Internet, we booked with Galápagos Travel (Aptos, CA; 800/969-9014). We could not have chosen a better organization.

Our 11-day trip, March 17-28, 2011, cost $5,200 each (not including international air to Ecuador) plus $418 each for the round-trip flight from Quito to the islands. We flew home from Quito on the 30th.

Galápagos Travel sent us...

My wife, Sandy, and I are snowbirds who spend the winters in Puerto Vallarta. Each year we explore a different part of Mexico, and in March ’11 we made a six-day, five-night trip to the Guadalajara area.

We stayed at the bed-and-breakfast Casa Armonia (Reforma 43, Tlaquepaque, Centro, Jalisco, Mexico; phone, in Mexico, 01 [33] 3563 3218 or 3219 or, in US or Canada, 266/973-0128). It’s located one block from the city’s main plaza and Calle Juarez, one of Tlaquepaque’s main shopping...

Eight female friends and I took a private, nine-day tour of western Turkey, Nov. 2-10, 2010. The itinerary, organized by TEO World Culture Tours (New York, NY; 888/444-1110) and conducted by Tamer Teoman, was thrilling.

We started in fascinating Cappadocia, continued to Ephesus, Pergamon and Troy and ended with the wonders of ancient Istanbul.

The tour was well organized and reasonably priced ($2,735 per person, including two flights within Turkey and all dinners; single...

My husband, Ed, and I stayed in Hotel Yigitalp Istanbul (Gencturk Cad. Cukur Cesme Sok. No. 38, Sehzadebasi, Istanbul, Turkey; phone +90 212 512 98 60) in October ’10.

This was an absolutely charming, old hotel with a 1930s feel to it. The front desk staff was wonderful, providing helpful suggestions and even giving us umbrellas to use on the day it rained.

With a three-night stay, airport transfers were free and a free half-day city tour was included as well as a 20% discount...

My one-day trip to Lesotho in September ’10 started with a one-hour flight on South African Airways from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Maseru, Lesotho’s capital. No visa is required for US citizens, and there are several flights each day, which makes a short trip very easy.

Including air, lodging, meals and guide, my Lesotho trip cost about $900. It was arranged by Adventures Abroad (Blaine, WA; 800/665-3998) to be a private tour prior to my joining their Southern Africa tour in...

A subscriber mentioned the complications of taking the blood thinner Coumadin (aka warfarin), used by many of us traveling seniors with atrial fibrillation (May ’11, pg. 44). The patient’s blood has to be checked for INR (clotting) every month or more, and if the INR value is outside the range prescribed for the patient, his or her dosage is changed and the INR is retested after a few days or a week.

Even with my doctor’s prescription, getting these tests has been a significant hurdle...

I read the letters on “coping with medical needs overseas” in the March, April and May ’11 issues. I am 81 and, after my having prostate cancer for 20 years, in May 2010 the cancer became active, causing both inability to urinate and then incontinence, mainly during daytime hours.

A traveler, I flew to Frankfurt from Cleveland in September ’10 by US Air economy class and spent 10 days with a former exchange student, now a doctor, in Kehl, Germany. I then drove to Munich and went with...
