My husband, Jim, and I took a month-long road trip through northern Spain and Portugal, May 24-June 23, 2011. After picking up our car in Biarritz, France, we drove into Spain and visited Bilbao in the Basque country; La Rioja (famous for its red wines); spectacular, Yosemite-like Pico de Europa, and the region of Galicia, with its rugged coastline and the Christian pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela.

In Portugal, Montesinho Natural Park has wonderful views and hiking trails....

My husband, Ed, and I traveled to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia for a month in the fall of 2009. We had a wonderful trip and enjoyed every moment of our travels.

In the summer of 2010, however, my husband found he didn’t have much energy — he didn’t feel good, but he didn’t feel bad either. He complained to the doctors, but when you are going to be 70 on your next birthday, no matter how young and active you have kept yourself you are still going to be 70.

Holland America Line’s 2011 repositioning cruise of MS Volendam from Singapore to Vancouver, BC, took 35 days, departing Singapore on April 14 and arriving in Vancouver on May 18.

Since I did not wish to book the full 35 days, I was attracted to the final segment, which departed Kobe, Japan, on May 2 and originally had stops planned at Yokohama, Hakodate and Kushiro before continuing to Alaska and Vancouver. However, nature intervened.

The devastating earthquake and...

My travel partner and I were scheduled to return from London’s Heathrow Airport to Cleveland, Ohio, by way of Chicago on Dec. 17, 2010. Upon our arrival at the airport, we were handed a notice that our United Airlines flight to Chicago had been canceled because of the nonarrival of an aircraft from the US. The United desk rebooked us on another United flight (operated by Continental Airlines) to Newark the next day.

The agent gave us a phone number for Room Solutions (0203 004...

As a tour operator, I was on Midway Atoll in March ’11 escorting a group of 15. Part of the Hawaiian Archipelago, the atoll is an unincorporated US territory, but everyone needs a valid passport to visit, even US citizens. Midway is probably best known as the site of the Battle of Midway, during WWII the turning point of the war in the Pacific.

The atoll is part of — and is the only access to — Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, one of the largest...

In the Alsatian wine region of France, we were fortunate to stay at Clos des Raisins (5, rue des Raisins, 68980, Beblenheim, France; phone 0033 03 89 79 45 11) in late April 2011. Built as a winery in 1722 and lovingly renovated in 2008 by Thierry Kruger and his wife, Armelle, I highly recommend this truly charming bed-and-breakfast.

It has four rooms in a wing adjacent to the family home. There is at least one handicapped-accessible room, a family room accommodating four people, and...

On a trip to Europe in May ’11, we wanted to take a break from our itinerary for a short stay in a quiet place with clean air and mountain views. We found the ideal place near Budapest, Hungary.

Hotel Silvanus (Fekete-hegy, Visegrád, H-2025, Hungary; phone 011 36 26 398 311) is located on a mountainside about 40 kilometers from the city. The rooms have nice views, either to the Danube Bend, itself a tourist attraction, or toward the forest.

The hotel has an outdoor pool...

In February ’11, eight people, including our guide, met for dinner at the majestic Taj Mahal hotel in the heart of Delhi. The members of our group had traveled to India from several different states but had one thing in common: we all had taken trips, which had been spectacular, with Rothschild Safaris (Denver, CO; 800/405-9463). Rothschild’s first venture into the wildlife safari experience in India, this trip was a departure from their usual African tour offerings.
