My wife, Gail, and I were walking in a small village in the backwaters of Kerala, India, back in January ’07 when a pleasant barber beckoned me into his little shop and, using gestures, offered to trim my beard.

“One hundred rupees,” he said in English.

I agreed and he trimmed my beard with an electric shaver and then shaved the back of my neck using hot lather and a big straight razor. My wife had a little trepidation about the razor until I told her I had seen him remove...

During my Italy trip in May ’11 (Nov. ’11, pg. 15), I was set to travel by train from Riva del Garda to Varenna on Sunday, May 22, when I heard the ominous news: Trenitalia was on strike!

The first part of the journey went as planned, by taxi from Riva del Garda to Rovereto, about 27 kilometers away, for €40 (near $55).

For the rest of the trip, I had purchased tickets for reserved first-class seats on RailEurope by calling RailEurope (800/622-8600) while in the US and using...

The sign for a restaurant across the street from the museum.

In Israel for only one week (Sept. 1-7, 2011) for a family wedding, I hadn’t planned on any sightseeing. However, a friend who had moved to the town of Zichron Ya’akov, a place I had not toured before, invited me to spend the day.

Zichron Ya’akov, an hour north of Tel Aviv and a half-hour south of Haifa, is situated on the foothills of the Carmel mountain range, overlooking a fertile valley and the Mediterranean Sea. This picturesque town, with houses dating back to the 1880s, saw...

In March 2010 I called Wholesale Flights and booked airfare for my husband and myself to South America.

We were going to fly on Dec. 23, 2010, from Detroit to Rio de Janeiro (via Charlotte, North Carolina) and on Jan. 23, 2011, from Santiago to Detroit (via Toronto). We would also fly from Rio to Iguassu Falls round trip and then to Buenos Aires, with a cruise after that. The price of $6,919 included business-class travel as well as the flights within South America.

On July 29, 2011, my wife, Susann, was hit by a motorcycle while in a crosswalk in Paris. She sustained an injury to her leg that required surgery after we returned to the United States.

We had purchased airline tickets from Lufthansa via Expedia.com for various flights: from Paris to Prague on Aug. 6, to Budapest on Aug. 11 and back to Paris on Aug. 13. The cost was $1,982. The tickets were nonrefundable.

I nursed my wife in our Paris hotel until it became clear that she...

I’ve cruised rivers in Europe, China and northern India with several companies, but my April 3-10, 2011, Rhine River cruise on Uniworld’s River Empress surpassed them all for style and elegance in an intimate and relaxed setting. Most of all, I loved being pampered!

The price for the seven-day cruise from Frankfurt am Main to Amsterdam was $1,999 plus $625 for an upgrade. The single supplement was waived on this sailing!

Flying in business class with Lufthansa round trip from...

Woman and child with faces decorated — Mandalay

Two friends and I went to Myanmar for eight days, Feb. 8-15, 2011. I really love traveling to unusual places, and this was one of the most different places I have ever been to.

We got our visas in Thailand but had to waste a day of our trip to do it. The rush cost was about $86 each. (A visa purchased in advance in the US costs $20 from the Myanmar Embassy; 202/332-3344, http://mewashingtondc.com. — Editor)

We flew to Yangon from Bangkok on Air Asia — a one-hour flight and...
